SUMMARY:Live from France: Pierre Bensusan
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nWinner of the Independent Music Award for his triple live album “Encore”\, voted Best World Music Guitarist by Guitar Player Magazine reader’s Poll\, winner of the Rose d’Or at the Montreux Festival for his debut album\, Pierre Bensusan is recognized as one of the greatest guitar players of the 21st century. \nWhen Michael Hedges titles one of his compositions “Bensusan”\, you know that the inspiration behind it must be special and Pierre Bensusan certainly is. Guitarists from Leo Kottke to Larry Corryel\, to Tuck Andress\, Tommy Emmanuel\, Mark Knopfler\, Andrew York\, Andy Timmons\, to Steve Lukather… have sung his praises\, and Steve Vai released three Bensusan albums on his label Favored Nations. And it’s not just guitarists who are so inspired by Pierre’s music\, as a recent studio collaboration with him on Donny Osmond’s latest album “Start Again” goes to show. \nIf World Music means the fusion of traditional\, contemporary\, jazz\, classical and pop music\, then Bensusan is one of the most eloquent World Music musicians of our time. A pianist in his beginnings then self-taught on the guitar\, the originality of his style makes him one of today’s greatest guitarists and composers for the instrument. Also called “The Prince of DADGAD”\, his story is far from trivial and it is on stage that this artist has earned his stripes: among others\, the Rose d’Or of the Montreux Festival\, and being elected Best Guitarist of World Music by the readers of Guitar Player Magazine! His triple album “Encore” won the Grand Prix of the Independent Music Awards in the category Best Live Album… Since his first performances in 1974 in France\, the guitarist has sold half a million albums and given thousands of concerts around the globe\, both solo and through numerous collaborations. \nBorn in French Algeria\, Pierre Bensusan is an adventurer of unusual lands. His almost “sacred” music is an intimate and orchestral hymn\, a solo crossing on a multi-shell Lowden guitar subjected to the natural elements with sound molecules and finger pulp on an ebony fingerboard for open tuning – an unique and transparent technique\, under the fingers of an adventurous pilgrim. Big emotion guaranteed. \n“For me\, Pierre can only justly be compared to someone of the stature of Keith Jarrett; so total is his mastery of the solo instrument\, his dazzling harmony\, his many innovations\, and his deft command of counterpoint\, the jazz idiom\, folk expression\, and all genres between and beyond. An entire history unfolds as he plays. But really\, like Jarrett\, the emotional depth – and this is where true artistry often likes to live – of many of his songs and compositions is all\, well\, breathtaking. With only his steel-string-acoustic guitar – and sometimes his rich\, affecting voice – Mr Bensusan can disassemble your heart and hand it back to you restored and renewed. As he did to mine tonight. A true giant.” \n-James Volpe Rotondi (editor at Guitar Player Magazine) \nSave 10% with membership! Members use PB24 as their promo code prefix (followed by unique member number). SUMMARY:Interference Series Presents: Positive Knowledge (Oluyemi & Ijeoma Thomas)
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nThe Interference Series is honored to present Bay Area-legends Positive Knowledge for a multi-day residency. \n“Positive Knowledge” is a performance duo that features multi-instrumentalist Oluyemi Thomas (bass clarinet\, saxophones and percussion) and Ijeoma Thomas (voice and percussion).Their compositions emerge from a long\, intense\, and ongoing involvement with American improvisational and jazz traditions\, as reconfigured through their participation in the musical life of other cultures. Both performers have undertaken extended musical travels\, in sub-Saharan and northern Africa\, the Middle East\, and South America (particularly Brazil)\, as well as Europe and North America. For many listeners\, their performances themselves resemble a journey\, though not to any known places. The works of “Positive Knowledge” undertake an ecstatic quest of the spirit\, seeking the uncommon sounds of sense\, correspondence\, and borderless harmony. While in Flagstaff\, the duo will collaborate with NAU students and Flagstaff community members in various events\, including this featured concert at Coconino Center for the Arts. This residency is supported by a generous contribution from John and Lynn Schiek. \nSave 10% with membership! Members use PK24 as their promo code prefix (followed by unique member number). SUMMARY:Up Next Flagstaff: Sleep Stampede and Prawn Party
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nUp Next Flagstaff is a new series at Coconino Center for the Arts that is proud to showcase local emerging artists \nSleep Stampede a singer-songwriter folk duo based in Flagstaff\, Arizona. Their sound has been described as “the feeling you get after a good long day in the mountains\,” which reflects their love for wild places that bring them inspiration. Sleep Stampede’s imagery-rich songwriting\, intimate performances\, and community-centered events evoke familiarity\, hope\, and sadness\, bringing listeners into a dream-like state of both comfort and heartbreak. \nJacqueline and John\, the team behind Sleep Stampede\, are both frequently covered in dirt\, fond of early mornings\, and feel most themselves while songwriting over coffee. Jacqueline is a guide\, teacher and facilitator focused on nature reconnection and creativity\, and John manages river restoration projects in Arizona. Their original music continues to grow and change with the tides of their inspirations. \nPrawn Party is an emerging indie band based out of Flagstaff\, AZ. Formed in March of 2024\, the group consists of Kevin Coronado (Guitar/vocals)\, Marley Wall (Bass/vocals)\, Preston Luce (Drums/wizardry)\, and Anthony Chesney (Guitar/vocals). As a newborn Frankenstein monster of psychedelic sounds\, they have formed an alliance to perform open heart surgery on your mind and bring you medium octane\, low fidelity music designed to make you dance while existentially contemplating the void. \nSave 10% with membership! Members use SP24 as their promo code prefix (followed by unique member number). SUMMARY:Living Traditions Presents: Old Blind Dogs
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nThe musical evolution of Old Blind Dogs began in Aberdeen in 1992 with roots that grew from the eclectic music scene that flourished in the Granite City during the early 90’s. Four musicians from very different musical backgrounds came together to create a full-time professional touring band with the aim of showcasing the rich tradition of songs and tunes of the North East of Scotland on an international stage. \nLike many of the early flag bearing Scottish folk bands\, the Old Blind Dogs line up has faced inevitable changes over the years but the core values at the band’s musical heart continue to beat strong. The current band line up has been settled for several years now and consists of four of Scotland’s finest traditional musicians at the top of their game. Original member Jonny Hardie (fiddle/vocals) is joined by Aaron Jones (cittern/guitar/vocals)\, Ali Hutton (pipes/whistles) and Donald Hay (percussion/vocals) and collectively they comprise one of the hottest live tickets on the traditional Scottish music scene today. \nAs recent inductees to the BBC ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards ‘Trad Music Hall of Fame’ the ‘Dugs’ will celebrate thirty years on the road in 2022 by launching their fourteenth studio album ‘Knucklehead Circus’ in Winter 2021. A joyous\, uplifting and fun album full of compelling energy and intoxicating rhythm on which ‘OBD’ continue to innovate within their tradition while faithfully revealing its essence. DESCRIPTION:Learn More\n\n\n\n\n\nFREDERICA HALL: ONE BLOOD AT THE PRECIPICE \nApril 13 – June 8\, 2024 in the Project Gallery \nPerformance: Mysterious Orphic Songs of Whales\, April 13\, 6 pm \nArtist Talk: June 6\, 6:30 pm \n\nFlagstaff artist Frederica Hall engages a multi-disciplinary approach to visual arts and performance art\, informed by reflections on challenging matters of present times.\n\n“As a creative I look for an inquiry that is relevant to myself and the state of the world\, something that can engage me deeply. In 2000 I had the opportunity to go to Australia\, camping and painting for a few months\, I went to Uluru and met the grandson of the head of the Uluru tribe and spent a day following him around Uluru stopping at sacred sites where he traditional could share some ancient stories with me and my husband. His stories taught me that there is only  ‘One Blood’ between all species\, and that we are all woven together in this living breath of the creator. Every being is equally essential in this great dream time tapestry.”

SUMMARY:FRANCISCO GONZÁLEZ CASTRO: DOES NOT SAY «I»\, BUT DOES «I»: BODIES\, LIMITS & TRANSGRESSIONS
DESCRIPTION:Learn More\n\n\n\n\n\nFRANCISCO GONZÁLEZ CASTRO: DOES NOT SAY «I»\, BUT DOES «I»: BODIES\, LIMITS & TRANSGRESSIONS \nAPRIL 13 – JUNE 8\, 2024 \nOPENING RECEPTION SATURDAY\, APRIL 13 \n\nMembers Preview 5 – 6 pm\nArtist Talk 6 – 6:30 pm\nPublic Reception 6 – 8 pm\n\n\n\nMixing genres of video\, performance\, and drawing\, Francisco González Castro’s work examines problems related to territorial borders\, social inequalities\, and bodily transgressions. The project title refers to German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche’s (1844-1900) existentialist quote that begins\, “The body is a great intelligence\,” (Thus Spoke Zarathustra\, 1883)\, and infers that the human body and soul are one. This title is illuminated in Castro’s own artistic philosophy\, which confronts the body\, people who reject the body\, and how the body is approached as subject and identity. Castro’s personal bodily transgressions and tests of endurance are vehicles for his discourse about geographic landscapes and political borders. It is within this integration of life-and-art\, body-and-spirit\, that we intend to immerse the audience in this physically ambitious and psychologically profound exhibition by Castro at Coconino Center for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Greenhouse Productions Presents: Brothers Reed
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nWith their comedic brotherly banter\, impeccable harmonic expression\, and widely varying influences\, a Brothers Reed performance will have you reflecting on lost lives and lovers\, laughing hysterically and leaving completely entertained. \nThe duo incorporates harmonica\, percussion\, into their live performances\, soothing your soul with songs that are familiar yet original. Whether they are finger picking their way through a lamentable ballad or bringing you around full-speed with a barn-burning bluegrass number\, The Brothers Reed are masters of their craft. \nDespite their brotherhood\, Aaron and Phil Reed didn’t start playing music together until five years ago after Phil left their hometown of St. Charles\, Missouri to join Aaron in the unsullied mountains of the American Northwest. The brothers family blend of folk encapsulates the grit and humor of Midwest life with the swagger and serenity of the west coast. Their style evokes finger picking folk singers of the 60’s and 70’s with a contemporary and boundless edge. Cultivated from years of performing in bands ranging from heavy metal to reggae and rock\, to punk\, country\, and funk\, their musical dichotomy is at the root of their diverse yet seamless folk-brand. \nThrough an exhaustive tour schedule that includes nearly 300 shows per year\, the Brothers Reed have quickly risen to regional renown and tour extensively throughout the U.S. With three studio albums released (Sick As Folk\, 2015; Monster In My Head\, 2016; Three\, 2018) a full band live release (Live at the Buckhunters Ball: Callahan\, CA\, 2017)\, and the latest “Caught in a Dream” 2019\, The Bros show no signs of slowing down anytime soon. \nSave 10% with membership! SUMMARY:Up Next Flagstaff & Happy Accidents! Presents: Sierra Bryan\, Gone Before Us\, Naming Our Monsters
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nUp Next Flagstaff at Coconino Center for the Arts showcases local emerging artists. This show in collaboration with Happy Accidents! \n\n\nSierra Bryan\, based out of Flagstaff\, AZ\, blends spunky-indie rock with warm\, folksy introspection – employing grungy electric guitars and beautiful cello arrangements alike. Her sound draws inspiration from other femme musicians such as Sharon Van Etten\, Beabadoobee\, and Liza Anne with musical influences from the likes of Gregory Alan Isakov and Joni Mitchell. \nHer 2020 debut album “Breathing In\, Breathing Out” which earned her a Flagstaff Viola Award nomination showcases her melancholy-yet-goofy approach to songwriting that holds storytelling at the center of her lyrics. In 2024\, she seeks to match the darker\, moodier tones with more mature lyrics dealing with mental health and religious deconstruction. Currently\, Bryan is gearing up to hit the studio to record her second full-length album and planning more tours for this upcoming year. \n\n\n\nGone Before Us gives a musical experience that blends the boundaries of several different genres into a new heavy groove.\n\nNaming Our Monsters is a local Flagstaff band that plays Southwest Emo/Punk. What used to be a solo project has turned into a full band experience you do not want to miss! Urian\, the songwriter for the band\, Takes Inspiration from Multitudes of genres and artists such as Modest Mouse\, Against Me!\, and Tegan and Sara. \nShow is general admission standing room only in the main gallery at Coconino Center for the Arts. \nSave 10% with membership! Members use HA!24 as their promo code prefix (followed by unique member number). SUMMARY:Interference Series Presents: Reclaimed Timber by Beyond This Point
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nWhat if you could hear the relationship between the built and natural worlds? \nFrom Chicago-based ensemble Beyond This Point\, Reclaimed Timber is a sonic portrait of US cities’ unique histories and relationships with their natural environments. \nReclaimed Timber\, an original production from Chicago ensemble Beyond This Point\, asks just this question. Six percussionists play on six pieces of wood for an entire hour\, allowing hypnotic rhythms and undulating waves of sound to crest and fall into each other. The planks of wood came directly from trees in the surrounding area\, and each piece reveals more and more complexity – more tones\, more timbres\, and more history – over the course of Reclaimed Timber. \nBeyond This Point is collaborating with local artists to source the wood for this performance of Reclaimed Timber– whether they be charred from fire\, felled to make way for development\, or desiccated from drought. As these pieces of the natural world are imbued with a “voice” through Reclaimed Timber\, they seem to pose more questions than statements: \nWho decides the value of the natural world?\nWhat pieces of our history are worth keeping?\nHow can we use our past to build our future? \nAccompanying the sounds of the wood is a reactive lighting installation made from over 5000 LEDs and over 200 paper lantern “houses”. The lights respond in real-time to the strikes on the wood\, reflecting the rhythms and waves of sound as flashes and waves of ambient light. \nPresented by the Interference Series in collaboration with NAU Percussion Studies\, NAU Honors College\, and the McAllister CEED (Climate\, Education\, Engagement\, and Design) Program at NAU. Made possible with generous support from John & Lynn Sheik. \nSave 10% with membership! Members use RT24 as their promo code prefix (followed by unique member number). SUMMARY:Interference Series Presents: Wayfaring
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nTaking its name from a beloved American folk song\, Wayfaring is a duo project between bassist/vocalist Katie Ernst and clarinetist James Falzone. What began as a casual meeting between like-minded players has formed into a collective of unusual nuance and depth\, drawing on source material from the jazz tradition\, hymns\, folk songs\, and original compositions from Ernst and Falzone. Wayfaring has toured extensively in the US and Canada and was featured at the 2016 Hyde Park Jazz Festival in Chicago and the 2017 Earshot Jazz Festival in Seattle. Their debut recording\, I Move\, You Move\, was released in Fall 2017 on the Allos Documents label to much critical acclaim and their follow up\, Intermezzo\, arrives in January 2024. \n“Modern jazz history is rife with strong duos\, but Wayfaring stands out by channeling ideas from American folk tradition or the church into music that extends well beyond the language of jazz. A stunning record. ” \n— Peter Margasak\, The Chicago Reader \n“One of the most austerely beautiful recordings of the year sounds very much like a balm for troubled times. Elements of jazz\, folk\, pop\, blues and other genres course through this work\, but it’s the long-lined lyricism and pervasive warmth of the music-making that leave the deepest and most lasting impression. ” \n— Howard Reich\, The Chicago Tribune \nThis performance is supported in part by the NAU Honors College and John and Lynn Schiek \nSave 10% with membership! SUMMARY:Alash
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nAlash are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei)\, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. \n\n\n\n\nWhat distinguishes this trio from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies\, western instruments\, and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music\, but its overall sound and spirit remain decidedly Tuvan. \nTrained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood\, the Alash musicians studied at Kyzyl Arts College just as Tuva was beginning to open up to the West. They formed a traditional ensemble and won multiple awards for traditional throat singing \nin international xöömei competitions\, both as an ensemble and as individuals. At the same time\, they paid close attention to new trends coming out of the West. They have borrowed newideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional \nTuvan music\, but they have never sacrificed the integrity of their own heritage in an effort to make their music more hip. \nAlash first toured the U.S. under the sponsorship of the OpenWorld Leadership program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts. Since then they have returned many times\, to the delight of American audiences. The Washington Post described their music as “utterly stunning\,” quipping that after the performance“audience members picked their jaws up off the floor.” \nAlash enjoys collaborating with musicians of all stripes. Since their early partnership with the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra\, they have joined forces with musicians across the spectrum—from country to classical to jazz to beatboxing. Alash appeared as guest artists on Béla Fleck & the Flecktones’ Grammy-winning holiday CD Jingle All the Way (2008). They joined Chicago’s innovative Fifth House Ensemble in a groundbreaking concert series called Sonic Meditations\, and later were part of a “global jam band” which recorded the soundtrack for the video game The Pathless. Most recently\, Bady-Dorzhu Ondar teamed up with beatboxer Shodekeh in a live recording of original Tuvan songs filtered through the creative artistry of hip hop musicians. \nBeyond performing\, Alash has a passion for teaching and promoting understanding between cultures. Their tours often include workshops in which they introduce Tuvan music to students in primary\, middle and high schools\, colleges\, universities\, and music conservatories. Children as young as 8 and 9 have learned to throat-sing. One inspired student exclaimed\, “Alash opened my eyes to a whole new world!” \nAlash albums: Alash Live at the Enchanted Garden (2006)\, Alash (2007)\, Buura (2011)\, Achai (2015\, re-released on Smithsonian Folkways in 2017)\, Meni Mana (2020)\, Embodiments by Bady-Dorzhu Ondar with Shodekeh and hip hop artists (2022). \nMembers of Alash: \nBady-Dorzhu Ondar: vocals\, igil\, guitar\, bayan (accordion).
