SUMMARY:Greenhouse Productions Presents: Bonnie "Prince" Billy
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nBonnie “Prince” Billy with special guest Laurel Premo \n\n\nThe man who sings and composes under the name Bonnie “Prince” Billy and acts under the name Will Oldham has\, over the past three-plus decades\, made an idiosyncratic journey through\, and an indelible mark on\, the worlds of indie rock and independent cinema. With his highly individualistic approach to music making and the music industry\, one that cherishes intimacy\, community\, mystery\, and spontaneity; his brilliance has captivated fans and made Bonnie one of our most influential and beloved songsmiths. \nBonnie “Prince” Billy’s latest offerings include the 2019’s I Made a Place\, 2020’s Superwolves (with Matt Sweeney) and Blind Date Party\, a collaborative album consisting of covers made with Bill Callahan during the pandemic lockdown. 2023 will see the release of his first children’s book\, based on the song “Shorty’s Ark” (from Superwolves)\, as well as a new proper BPB record of new songs. \n\n\n\n\nLaurel Premo is known for her rhythmically deep and rapt delivery of roots music on fiddle\, guitar\, and vocals. Her solo performances dive deep into traditional and new fiddle music\, musically revealing a bloom of underlying harmonic drones\, minimalist repetition\, and rich polyrhythms. Presenting these sounds on finger style electric guitar and fiddle\, Premo fully leans in to the archaic melodies and in-between intonations that connect folk sounds to the mystic and unknown. \n\n\n\nSave 10% with membership! Members use BP23 as their promo code prefix. SUMMARY:Mama's Broke
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nMama’s Broke have spent the past eight years in a near-constant state of transience\, pounding the transatlantic tour trail. They’ve brought their dark\, fiery folk-without-borders sound to major festivals and DIY punk houses alike\, absorbing traditions from their maritime home in Eastern Canada all the way to Ireland and Indonesia. Nowhere is the duo’s art-in-motion approach more apparent than on their long-awaited sophomore record Narrow Line (May 13\, 2022 on Free Dirt Records); it’s the sound of nowhere in particular\, yet woven with a rich synthesis of influences that knows no borders. It earned them a JUNO nomination for Traditional Roots Album of the Year 2022. The eleven songs on Narrow Line burrow deeply\, with close harmony duets\, commanding vocals\, and poignant contemplations on cycles of life\, including birth and death. Tinges of Americana stand side-by-side with the ghosts of Eastern European fiddle tunes and ancient a cappella ballad singing\, melding into an unusually accessible dark-folk sound. A careful listen of Narrow Line invokes an ephemeral sense of place—whether real or imagined—inviting us to take comfort in the infinite possibilities of life\, whether or not we ever choose to settle down. \nFor a group defined by constant touring\, it’s not surprising that the two artists that make up Mama’s Broke\, Lisa Maria and Amy Lou Keeler\, met on the road. As Lisa remembers it\, “Amy was driving her old Mercedes from Montreal to Nova Scotia and I was looking for a ride. We spent the 17 hours in the car talking almost exclusively about music. By the time we reached Halifax we started playing together\, and within a week or two became a band.” Both coming out of traveling communities that are focused on music and protest\, the two owe the way in which they move through the world to the integrated and self-sustaining nature of DIY culture and activism. It was a busy life that took them on a roundabout annual touring schedule running between Canada\, the United States\, Ireland\, the UK\, and Europe. In each country\, they built grassroots DIY communities to support their music or moved along the pathways of communal organizing that sustained other touring artists. \nThe driving force behind this band is – and has always been – the commitment to challenge borders between people\, places\, and traditions; while encouraging freedom of expression and community through music. \n Save 10% with membership! SUMMARY:Greenhouse Productions Presents: SUSTO
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n\nSUSTO will return with My Entire Life July 28 via New West Records. The 12-song set was produced by Wolfgang Zimmerman (Band of Horses) and SUSTO’s Justin Osborne and Johnny Delaware. My Entire Life follows their critically acclaimed 2021 album Time in the Sun which Holler said “provides proof that Osborne and his bandmates are an important voice in today’s conflicted world\,” while No Depression called it a “fluid and engaging listen.” Ink 19 said “It’s a great example of SUSTO’s ability to create true lyrical and musical masterpieces so fresh you simply cannot turn it off” while the Bitter Southerner named it one of “The Best Southern Albums of 2021.” \n  \nA season of drastic change is what brought SUSTO frontman Justin Osborne to the band’s new album. There was a divorce\, difficulties re-building his band after the pandemic\, and the pain and helplessness of witnessing family members struggle with addiction and mental illness. Despite these challenges. Justin ultimately found himself in a new landscape\, with new love and a deeper perspective\, all of which is masterfully projected into My Entire Life. As a whole\, the album documents Justin’s personal journey through highs and lows in his life\, with many of the details on full display. He narrates the demise and aftermath of an almost decade long relationship\, while celebrating the joy of falling in love\, and the hopefulness of starting over. \n  \nToday\, Paste Magazine premiered the video for the album’s title track and lead single\, “My Entire Life\,” a song with an urgency “to keep living.” Director Luke Pilgrim says\, “We at Sozo Bear Films ventured into the relatively unknown world of AI art. We took inspiration from the lyrics\, SUSTO’s entire catalog\, as well as Justin’s previous musical endeavors to create visuals that represent themes from his entire life. We used stable diffusion to create a mind-bending psychedelic experience. Stable Diffusion is a type of deep learning generative neural network with the ability to prompt\, render and process AI imagery.” \n  \nSave 10% with membership! SUMMARY:Daniel Champagne
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n\nDaniel Champagne exudes a natural ease on stage\, as he sings poignant lyrics and beautifully crafted melodies that invariably whisk the heart up with grand romanticism. Coupled with an exhilarating guitar talent that transcends mere acoustic playing to replicate a whole band\, Champagne must be seen to be believed. \n\nThe story goes that Daniel first picked up his instrument of choice as a 5-year-old following in the footsteps of a musical father. He began writing songs at 12\, training classically throughout his teens and performing wherever he could\, honing his craft and developing the dynamic live show that he is renowned for today. At 18 he left school\, turned professional and hit the road without looking back. \n\n\nThe following decade saw him release 5 studio albums\, tour relentlessly around the globe with upwards of 300 shows per year\, play some of the biggest festivals under the sun and share stages with the likes of Tommy Emmanuel\, INXS\, John Butler\, Lucinda Williams\, Ani DiFranco\, Judy Collins and Rodrigo y Gabriela. \n\n\nIn early 2020 as the COVID pandemic ground all touring to a halt\, Daniel returned to Australia writing music and further honing his craft and returned to international audiences with a swag of new songs and a complete new live show. \n\n\nHis current release\, “Shimmer Through The Windscreen” is making waves on the streaming services and promises great critical acclaim once it is circulated to the media. \n\n\n“Daniel Champagne is a crossroads. Fusing the strong traditions of Blues\, Folk and other roots art with pop showmanship and admirable lyrical ability. I firmly believe that he will become an ambassador for roots music in a time where it desperately needs representation.” The Indie Blender\, CANADA \n  \n\nSave 10% with membership! SUMMARY:EQUUS: The Horse Rendered in Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:TANNER JENSEN\, RON TOAHANI JACKSON\, & KATHY TAYLOR \nJuly 8 – September 2\, 2023 \nOpening Reception: July 8 \n\nMembers’ Preview: 5-6 pm\nArtist Gallery Talks: 6 pm\nPublic Reception: 6-8 pm\n\nClosing Reception: September 2\, 6-8 pm \nEQUUS: The Horse Rendered in Contemporary Art aims to transcend conventions of Western American art\, placing the viewer in a liminal space to contemplate the threshold between traditional depictions and contemporary perspectives. Equus (Latin term for horse) brings together the creative work of three accomplished artists—Tanner Jensen\, Ron Toahani Jackson\, and Kathy Taylor—who share a kinship of mutual respect with\, and admiration for\, the horse: free and unbridled in spirit and form. \nTanner Jensen (Greenville\, North Carolina). Jensen has been enthralled with horses since she was a child; since then\, they have served as a muse\, the source of inspiration for her creative practice. “It’s a mystery to me why the horse lends itself to my search for understanding\, but it does. Through these animals\, I have learned to be a much better human being. They’ve taught me patience\, given me lessons about life and death\, lead me through grief\, and are a constant reminder to stay present and to delight in this miracle of a world” (tannerjensenfineart.com). Before moving to North Carolina\, Jensen was a resident of Flagstaff intermittently since 1976. \nRon Toahani Jackson (Tségháhoodzání or Window Rock\, Navajo Nation\, Arizona). Toahani is an artist\, photographer and animal rights activist working to preserve the last free wild roaming horses on his ancestral lands. The artist describes the intimate experiences he has with the wild horses that inspire his work: “When you sit in the landscape with the horses\, they will come up and surround you. They get close\, just a few feet from you. They are spiritual; it is a spiritual experience.” Toahani’s monotypes are one-of-a-kind ink or painted images\, created on a substrate and transferred to a paper surface\, oftentimes embellished with additional pencil marks or textures. Toahani’s videography of wild horses is displayed on the exterior of Coconino Center for the Arts during evening viewing events. \nKathy Taylor (Phoenix\, Arizona). Taylor reflects on the development of the horse as a reoccurring motif and as part of her intuitive approach to mixed-media painting and sculpture: “When the first horse emerged in one of my paintings\, it was no surprise to find out that these beautiful symbols of strength\, freedom\, and power were just what I needed at the time. Horse had chosen me! While I paint\, the horses meet me in that place where the invisible world meets visible reality bringing with them messages of hope and healing” (Voyage Phoenix\, October 18\, 2018). Taylor attributes her abstract artistic influences on her formative years living in Southern California in the 1960s.
