The ensemble performs music from throughout the Middle East. Join us for an evening of lively classic and popular songs and instrumental pieces from Egypt\, Turkey\, Lebanon\, Iran and more. For this performance\, our repertoire focuses on the concepts of love and wind\, two words with a close relationship in Arabic poetry and song lyrics. DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n\n\nDavid Huckfelt is a singer/ lyricist /activist and founding frontman of Minneapolis indie-folk cult favorites The Pines. An Iowa native and former theology student\, Huckfelt attended the Iowa Writers Workshop before turning his attention to songwriting and performing. With improvisational mastery\, Huckfelt’s shows and songs of no-spiritual-surrender have earned him a devoted following from small-town opera houses & theaters to national festival stages like Hardly Strictly Bluegrass\, Edmonton and Calgary Folk Fests\, and the legendary First Avenue mainroom\, sharing stages with Mavis Staples\, Emmylou Harris\, Bon Iver\, Calexico\, Trampled By Turtles & more. An early encounter and collaboration with radical Native American poet John Trudell introduced Huckfelt as friend & partner to an array of Indigenous artists & activists including Winona LaDuke\, Louise Erdrich\, & Keith Secola\, working for climate justice and tribal sovereignty under the banner of music + resistance. He is one of the most influential artists in the field today. Rising from the grassroots of North America\, he is a songwriter of the people. Critics have dubbed him as the Native versions of both Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen. NDN Kars (Indian cars)\, his most popular song is considered the contemporary Native American anthem\, achieving legendary status and earning him a well deserved cult following. It has been the number one requested song on tribal radio since the 1992. In 2011\, he joined the ranks of Jimmy Hendrix\, Hank Williams\, Crystal Gale\, and Richie Valens\, and was inducted into the Native Music Hall of Fame. \nBorn in 1957 in Cook\, Minnesota\, Secola is affiliated with the Anishinabe tribe. He graduated from Mesabi Community College with a degree in Public Service in 1979\, and completed a BA in American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota in 1982. He is married and has two children. \nSecola is an accomplished artist\, garnering awards and accolades as a musician\, a singer\, a songwriter\, a composer and a producer. He is highly skilled with the guitar\, flute\, mandolin\, banjo\, harmonica\, and piano\, and has played in venues from the halls of the Chicago Urban Indian Centre\, to the walls of the bottom of the Grand Canyon. He has also performed at the Olympic Games in Atlanta 1996 and Salt Lake City 2002\, and toured Europe several times. Among his numerous appearances he has graced the stages of the Rockslide Festival in Denmark\, the Grand Opening Gala of the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian\, The Kennedy Center and the SXSW in Austin\, TX\, and is a staple at the Grassroots Festival in Upstate New York\, North Carolina and Florida. \nA seven-time Native American Music Award winner\, Secola has earned NAMMYs not only for his music\, but also his abilities as a producer\, to include The Best Linguistic Recording for producing ANISHINABEMOIN (2007). A well respected musician\, he has worked with music legends such as Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead. DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n\n\nTuvan throat singing (xöömei)\, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time.\n\n\n\nAlash are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei)\, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. What distinguishes this group from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies\, western instruments\, and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music\, but its overall sound and spirit remain decidedly Tuvan. \nTrained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood\, the Alash musicians studied at Kyzyl Arts College just as Tuva was beginning to open up to the West. They formed a traditional ensemble and won multiple awards for traditional throat singing\nin international xöömei competitions\, both as an ensemble and as individuals. At the same time\, they paid close attention to new trends coming out of the West. They have borrowed newideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional\nTuvan music\, but they have never sacrificed the integrity of their own heritage in an effort to make their music more hip. \nAlash first toured the U.S. under the sponsorship of the OpenWorld Leadership program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts. Since then they have returned many times\, to the delight of American audiences. The Washington Post described their music as “utterly stunning\,” quipping that after the performance“audience members picked their jaws up off the floor.” \nAlash enjoys collaborating with musicians of all stripes. Since their early partnership with the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra\, they have joined forces with musicians across the spectrum—from country to classical to jazz to beatboxing. Alash appeared as guest artists on Béla Fleck & the Flecktones’ Grammy-winning holiday CD Jingle All the Way (2008). They joined Chicago’s innovative Fifth House Ensemble in a groundbreaking concert series called Sonic Meditations\, and later were part of a “global jam band” which recorded the soundtrack for the video game The Pathless. Most recently\, Bady-Dorzhu Ondar teamed up with beatboxer Shodekeh in a live recording of original Tuvan songs filtered through the creative artistry of hip hop musicians. \nBeyond performing\, Alash has a passion for teaching and promoting understanding between cultures. Their tours often include workshops in which they introduce Tuvan music to students in primary\, middle and high schools\, colleges\, universities\, and music conservatories. Children as young as 8 and 9 have learned to throat-sing. They’ve brought their dark\, fiery folk-without-borders sound to major festivals and DIY punk houses alike\, absorbing traditions from their maritime home in Eastern Canada all the way to Ireland and Indonesia. Nowhere is the duo’s art-in-motion approach more apparent than on their long-awaited sophomore record Narrow Line (May 13\, 2022 on Free Dirt Records); it’s the sound of nowhere in particular\, yet woven with a rich synthesis of influences that knows no borders. It earned them a JUNO nomination for Traditional Roots Album of the Year 2022. The eleven songs on Narrow Line burrow deeply\, with close harmony duets\, commanding vocals\, and poignant contemplations on cycles of life\, including birth and death. Tinges of Americana stand side-by-side with the ghosts of Eastern European fiddle tunes and ancient a cappella ballad singing\, melding into an unusually accessible dark-folk sound. A careful listen of Narrow Line invokes an ephemeral sense of place—whether real or imagined—inviting us to take comfort in the infinite possibilities of life\, whether or not we ever choose to settle down. \nFor a group defined by constant touring\, it’s not surprising that the two artists that make up Mama’s Broke\, Lisa Maria and Amy Lou Keeler\, met on the road. As Lisa remembers it\, “Amy was driving her old Mercedes from Montreal to Nova Scotia and I was looking for a ride. We spent the 17 hours in the car talking almost exclusively about music. By the time we reached Halifax we started playing together\, and within a week or two became a band.” Both coming out of traveling communities that are focused on music and protest\, the two owe the way in which they move through the world to the integrated and self-sustaining nature of DIY culture and activism. It was a busy life that took them on a roundabout annual touring schedule running between Canada\, the United States\, Ireland\, the UK\, and Europe. DESCRIPTION:FORE! is a miniature golf art installation exhibition and fundraiser to support exhibitions and programming at CCA. Following the success of the pilot project in 2023\, FORE! will return this January. CCA’s 4\,000 square foot gallery will turn into a 9-hole miniature golf course\, with each green uniquely designed by an Arizona artist or local community group! \nGather a group of four to play in our FORE!\nOpening Tournament on Saturday\, January 17th. On November 19\, Thin Air will host a poetry workshop led by poet and writer\, Sherwin Bitsui. Participants will explore poetic forms that are in conversation with the works displayed in the “Shifting Topographies: Extracting the Landscape” exhibition. \nSherwin Bitsui is the author of three collections of poetry\, Dissolve\, Flood Song\, and Shapeshift. He is the recipient of a Whiting Award\, an American Book Award\, and the PEN Book Award. His poems have appeared in Narrative\, Black Renaissance Noir\, American Poet\, The Iowa Review\, LIT\, and elsewhere. SUMMARY:S.E. Willis Presents an Evening of Flagstaff Blues
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n\nSaturday November 15 will be an evening of Flagstaff Blues featuring S.E.Willis\, Tommy Dukes\, Bob Blasi\, Roger Smith\, Dale Caddell\, Chuck Curry and Greg Varlotta. \nI started playing music in bands while attending Coconino High in Flagstaff. I was playing rock’n’roll music as it existed in 1969\, for fraternity parties\, high school dances and teen dances at Oddfellows Underground on Arrowhead. At that time\, aside from other teen bands and country groups\, the other side of town was represented by Winslow’s Tommy Dukes. Tommy was a grown\, if young man at that time and he was the star of South Side\, an area we didn’t venture into much. Back then Tommy wasn’t playing a lot of hard core blues (though he did play some killer Jimmy Reed)\, mostly soul and R&B. But Tommy came to Winslow from Hattiesburg Mississippi and had the look and the sound and as time went by he was more influenced by B.B. and Albert King\, among others. And Tommy Dukes is still here and still playing great blues music. \nMeanwhile\, I was searching out the few Blues records that arrived here. Muddy Waters\, Howlin’ Wolf\, Albert King\, and\, most of all for me\, Robert Johnson. My piano models were Memphis Slim\, Otis Spann and Johnny Johnson. \nLocal musicians through the 70s\, 80s and on mostly played in bars (and still do). Concerts were for touring\, more respectable acts. \nIn 1984 I started Monday Night Blues at Charly’s in the Weatherford Hotel with my brother John on bass\, Charlie Mossman (RIP) on drums and Dave Duncan on guitar. And I tracked Tommy down—I didn’t see how we could claim to be playing Blues without him. \nIt was very popular and is still happening now\, though on Wednesday night. \nWe all moved on. I went to San Francisco where I got to perform with a lot of great blues musicians\, most not widely known\, but also Elvin Bishop\, Charly Musselwhite\, Bo Diddly\, Chuck Berry\, Albert King\, Pinetop Perkins\, James Cotton and many others. \nNow I’m back in Flagstaff and Tommy is still here playing excellent blues. We’re older\, and I don’t know how many more opportunities we’ll have\, but Saturday November 15 we’re bringing the old school Flagstaff Blues to Coconino Center for the Arts. I’ve put together a band that includes four members of the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame: myself\, Tommy\, Bob Blasi (drums and vocals) and Roger Smith (bass). We also have Flagstaff’s own Dale Caddell on guitar. I met Dale at Coconino High and have played with him off and on ever since\, notably in a popular local 80s band\, the Shake. Dale recorded with Tommy as Tommy Duke and the Blue Bloods (also featuring Bob Blasi)\, so he seemed like the best choice for this show. Tommy’s blues has frequently featured horns\, and local hero Chuck Curry (trumpet) agreed to be a part of this\, along with Greg Varlotta on trombone. \nI wanted the people of Flagstaff to have a chance to support their local bluesmen\, and to present Tommy’s music (and mine and Bob’s\, with Roger\, Dale\, Chuck and Greg) in a concert setting.
