SUMMARY:EQUUS: The Horse Rendered in Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:TANNER JENSEN\, RON TOAHANI JACKSON\, & KATHY TAYLOR \nJuly 8 – September 2\, 2023 \nOpening Reception: July 8 \n\nMembers’ Preview: 5-6 pm\nArtist Gallery Talks: 6 pm\nPublic Reception: 6-8 pm\n\nClosing Reception: September 2\, 6-8 pm \nEQUUS: The Horse Rendered in Contemporary Art aims to transcend conventions of Western American art\, placing the viewer in a liminal space to contemplate the threshold between traditional depictions and contemporary perspectives. Equus (Latin term for horse) brings together the creative work of three accomplished artists—Tanner Jensen\, Ron Toahani Jackson\, and Kathy Taylor—who share a kinship of mutual respect with\, and admiration for\, the horse: free and unbridled in spirit and form. \nTanner Jensen (Greenville\, North Carolina). Jensen has been enthralled with horses since she was a child; since then\, they have served as a muse\, the source of inspiration for her creative practice. “It’s a mystery to me why the horse lends itself to my search for understanding\, but it does. Through these animals\, I have learned to be a much better human being. They’ve taught me patience\, given me lessons about life and death\, lead me through grief\, and are a constant reminder to stay present and to delight in this miracle of a world” (tannerjensenfineart.com). Before moving to North Carolina\, Jensen was a resident of Flagstaff intermittently since 1976. \nRon Toahani Jackson (Tségháhoodzání or Window Rock\, Navajo Nation\, Arizona). Toahani is an artist\, photographer and animal rights activist working to preserve the last free wild roaming horses on his ancestral lands. The artist describes the intimate experiences he has with the wild horses that inspire his work: “When you sit in the landscape with the horses\, they will come up and surround you. They get close\, just a few feet from you. They are spiritual; it is a spiritual experience.” Toahani’s monotypes are one-of-a-kind ink or painted images\, created on a substrate and transferred to a paper surface\, oftentimes embellished with additional pencil marks or textures. Toahani’s videography of wild horses is displayed on the exterior of Coconino Center for the Arts during evening viewing events. \nKathy Taylor (Phoenix\, Arizona). Taylor reflects on the development of the horse as a reoccurring motif and as part of her intuitive approach to mixed-media painting and sculpture: “When the first horse emerged in one of my paintings\, it was no surprise to find out that these beautiful symbols of strength\, freedom\, and power were just what I needed at the time. Horse had chosen me! While I paint\, the horses meet me in that place where the invisible world meets visible reality bringing with them messages of hope and healing” (Voyage Phoenix\, October 18\, 2018). Taylor attributes her abstract artistic influences on her formative years living in Southern California in the 1960s.

SUMMARY:Mama's Broke
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nMama’s Broke have spent the past eight years in a near-constant state of transience\, pounding the transatlantic tour trail. They’ve brought their dark\, fiery folk-without-borders sound to major festivals and DIY punk houses alike\, absorbing traditions from their maritime home in Eastern Canada all the way to Ireland and Indonesia. Nowhere is the duo’s art-in-motion approach more apparent than on their long-awaited sophomore record Narrow Line (May 13\, 2022 on Free Dirt Records); it’s the sound of nowhere in particular\, yet woven with a rich synthesis of influences that knows no borders. It earned them a JUNO nomination for Traditional Roots Album of the Year 2022. The eleven songs on Narrow Line burrow deeply\, with close harmony duets\, commanding vocals\, and poignant contemplations on cycles of life\, including birth and death. Tinges of Americana stand side-by-side with the ghosts of Eastern European fiddle tunes and ancient a cappella ballad singing\, melding into an unusually accessible dark-folk sound. A careful listen of Narrow Line invokes an ephemeral sense of place—whether real or imagined—inviting us to take comfort in the infinite possibilities of life\, whether or not we ever choose to settle down. \nFor a group defined by constant touring\, it’s not surprising that the two artists that make up Mama’s Broke\, Lisa Maria and Amy Lou Keeler\, met on the road. As Lisa remembers it\, “Amy was driving her old Mercedes from Montreal to Nova Scotia and I was looking for a ride. We spent the 17 hours in the car talking almost exclusively about music. By the time we reached Halifax we started playing together\, and within a week or two became a band.” Both coming out of traveling communities that are focused on music and protest\, the two owe the way in which they move through the world to the integrated and self-sustaining nature of DIY culture and activism. It was a busy life that took them on a roundabout annual touring schedule running between Canada\, the United States\, Ireland\, the UK\, and Europe. In each country\, they built grassroots DIY communities to support their music or moved along the pathways of communal organizing that sustained other touring artists. \nThe driving force behind this band is – and has always been – the commitment to challenge borders between people\, places\, and traditions; while encouraging freedom of expression and community through music. \n Save 10% with membership!
