SUMMARY:Jayne Lee Performance Monsoon
DESCRIPTION:Learn More\n\n\n\n\n\nJayne Lee Performance Monsoon \nJune 29\, 2024 \n\nBorn in Wales\, Jayne trained in London at The Place\, and at The Juilliard School in NYC\, and has danced and choreographed for London Contemporary Dance Theatre for 10 years. Jayne moved to Flagstaff to become a Grand Canyon River Guide and still guides river trips in the summers. Monsoon is a solo performance piece created after a particularly impressive monsoon season in Grand Canyon. The piece is directly inspired by an event in which there were waterfalls pouring off the steep Muav walls and the river and side streams swelled massively in volume and turned a thick\, dark red brown. Thunder cracked and echoed through the canyon\, we humans felt small and insignificant.

SUMMARY:Christine Cassano: QUADRIVIUM
DESCRIPTION:CHRISTINE CASSANO: QUADRIVIUM \nJune 29 – September 28\, 2024 in the Project Gallery \nQUADRIVIUM is a sound instrument as well as a soundscape installation. A light push from the hand engages the forty-nine suspended bronze pieces to play sound and create a mediative environment—a space where matter\, energy and vibration connect. The installation can be experienced by walking around it\, sitting nearby or by laying back on the seated platform underneath it. Its title\, “Quadrivium” is the Latin word meaning “where four roads meet—a crossroads” and references a curriculum established during the Renaissance era consisting of four subjects: Arithmetic\, Geometry\, Harmonics & Astronomy. SUMMARY:Larry & Joe
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nThese two virtuosic multi-instrumentalists fuse their respective Venezuelan and Appalachian folk traditions on the harp\, banjo\, cuatro\, fiddle\, upright bass\, guitar\, and maracas to prove that music has no borders. Their engaging bilingual (esp / eng) program includes storytelling\, humor\, singalongs\, and dancing. \nLarry & Joe were destined to make music together. \nLarry Bellorín hails from Monagas\, Venezuela and is a legend of Llanera music. Joe Troop is from North Carolina and is a GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass and oldtime musician. Larry was forced into exile and is an asylum seeker in North Carolina. Joe\, after a decade in South America\, got stranded back in his stomping grounds in the pandemic. Larry worked construction to make ends meet. Joe’s acclaimed “latingrass” band Che Apalache was forced into hiatus\, and he shifted into action working with asylum seeking migrants. Then Larry met Joe. \nCurrently based in the Triangle of North Carolina\, both men are versatile multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters on a mission to show that music has no borders. As a duo they perform a fusion of Venezuelan and Appalachian folk music on harp\, banjo\, cuatro\, fiddle\, maracas\, guitar\, upright bass\, and whatever else they decide to throw in the van. The program they offer features a distinct blend of their musical inheritances and traditions as well as storytelling about the ways that music and social movements coalesce. \nSave 10% with membership! Members use LJ24 as their promo code prefix (followed by unique member number). SUMMARY:Live from France: Pierre Bensusan
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nWinner of the Independent Music Award for his triple live album “Encore”\, voted Best World Music Guitarist by Guitar Player Magazine reader’s Poll\, winner of the Rose d’Or at the Montreux Festival for his debut album\, Pierre Bensusan is recognized as one of the greatest guitar players of the 21st century. \nWhen Michael Hedges titles one of his compositions “Bensusan”\, you know that the inspiration behind it must be special and Pierre Bensusan certainly is. Guitarists from Leo Kottke to Larry Corryel\, to Tuck Andress\, Tommy Emmanuel\, Mark Knopfler\, Andrew York\, Andy Timmons\, to Steve Lukather… have sung his praises\, and Steve Vai released three Bensusan albums on his label Favored Nations. And it’s not just guitarists who are so inspired by Pierre’s music\, as a recent studio collaboration with him on Donny Osmond’s latest album “Start Again” goes to show. \nIf World Music means the fusion of traditional\, contemporary\, jazz\, classical and pop music\, then Bensusan is one of the most eloquent World Music musicians of our time. A pianist in his beginnings then self-taught on the guitar\, the originality of his style makes him one of today’s greatest guitarists and composers for the instrument. Also called “The Prince of DADGAD”\, his story is far from trivial and it is on stage that this artist has earned his stripes: among others\, the Rose d’Or of the Montreux Festival\, and being elected Best Guitarist of World Music by the readers of Guitar Player Magazine! His triple album “Encore” won the Grand Prix of the Independent Music Awards in the category Best Live Album… Since his first performances in 1974 in France\, the guitarist has sold half a million albums and given thousands of concerts around the globe\, both solo and through numerous collaborations. \nBorn in French Algeria\, Pierre Bensusan is an adventurer of unusual lands. His almost “sacred” music is an intimate and orchestral hymn\, a solo crossing on a multi-shell Lowden guitar subjected to the natural elements with sound molecules and finger pulp on an ebony fingerboard for open tuning – an unique and transparent technique\, under the fingers of an adventurous pilgrim. Big emotion guaranteed. \n“For me\, Pierre can only justly be compared to someone of the stature of Keith Jarrett; so total is his mastery of the solo instrument\, his dazzling harmony\, his many innovations\, and his deft command of counterpoint\, the jazz idiom\, folk expression\, and all genres between and beyond. An entire history unfolds as he plays. But really\, like Jarrett\, the emotional depth – and this is where true artistry often likes to live – of many of his songs and compositions is all\, well\, breathtaking. With only his steel-string-acoustic guitar – and sometimes his rich\, affecting voice – Mr Bensusan can disassemble your heart and hand it back to you restored and renewed. As he did to mine tonight. A true giant.” \n-James Volpe Rotondi (editor at Guitar Player Magazine) \nSave 10% with membership! Members use PB24 as their promo code prefix (followed by unique member number). SUMMARY:Interference Series Presents: Positive Knowledge (Oluyemi & Ijeoma Thomas)
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nThe Interference Series is honored to present Bay Area-legends Positive Knowledge for a multi-day residency. \n“Positive Knowledge” is a performance duo that features multi-instrumentalist Oluyemi Thomas (bass clarinet\, saxophones and percussion) and Ijeoma Thomas (voice and percussion).Their compositions emerge from a long\, intense\, and ongoing involvement with American improvisational and jazz traditions\, as reconfigured through their participation in the musical life of other cultures. Both performers have undertaken extended musical travels\, in sub-Saharan and northern Africa\, the Middle East\, and South America (particularly Brazil)\, as well as Europe and North America. For many listeners\, their performances themselves resemble a journey\, though not to any known places. The works of “Positive Knowledge” undertake an ecstatic quest of the spirit\, seeking the uncommon sounds of sense\, correspondence\, and borderless harmony. While in Flagstaff\, the duo will collaborate with NAU students and Flagstaff community members in various events\, including this featured concert at Coconino Center for the Arts. SUMMARY:Up Next Flagstaff: Sleep Stampede and Prawn Party
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nUp Next Flagstaff is a new series at Coconino Center for the Arts that is proud to showcase local emerging artists \nSleep Stampede a singer-songwriter folk duo based in Flagstaff\, Arizona. Their sound has been described as “the feeling you get after a good long day in the mountains\,” which reflects their love for wild places that bring them inspiration. Sleep Stampede’s imagery-rich songwriting\, intimate performances\, and community-centered events evoke familiarity\, hope\, and sadness\, bringing listeners into a dream-like state of both comfort and heartbreak. \nJacqueline and John\, the team behind Sleep Stampede\, are both frequently covered in dirt\, fond of early mornings\, and feel most themselves while songwriting over coffee. Jacqueline is a guide\, teacher and facilitator focused on nature reconnection and creativity\, and John manages river restoration projects in Arizona. Their original music continues to grow and change with the tides of their inspirations. \nPrawn Party is an emerging indie band based out of Flagstaff\, AZ. Formed in March of 2024\, the group consists of Kevin Coronado (Guitar/vocals)\, Marley Wall (Bass/vocals)\, Preston Luce (Drums/wizardry)\, and Anthony Chesney (Guitar/vocals). As a newborn Frankenstein monster of psychedelic sounds\, they have formed an alliance to perform open heart surgery on your mind and bring you medium octane\, low fidelity music designed to make you dance while existentially contemplating the void. \nSave 10% with membership! Members use SP24 as their promo code prefix (followed by unique member number). SUMMARY:Living Traditions Presents: Old Blind Dogs
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nThe musical evolution of Old Blind Dogs began in Aberdeen in 1992 with roots that grew from the eclectic music scene that flourished in the Granite City during the early 90’s. Four musicians from very different musical backgrounds came together to create a full-time professional touring band with the aim of showcasing the rich tradition of songs and tunes of the North East of Scotland on an international stage. \nLike many of the early flag bearing Scottish folk bands\, the Old Blind Dogs line up has faced inevitable changes over the years but the core values at the band’s musical heart continue to beat strong. The current band line up has been settled for several years now and consists of four of Scotland’s finest traditional musicians at the top of their game. Original member Jonny Hardie (fiddle/vocals) is joined by Aaron Jones (cittern/guitar/vocals)\, Ali Hutton (pipes/whistles) and Donald Hay (percussion/vocals) and collectively they comprise one of the hottest live tickets on the traditional Scottish music scene today. \nAs recent inductees to the BBC ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards ‘Trad Music Hall of Fame’ the ‘Dugs’ will celebrate thirty years on the road in 2022 by launching their fourteenth studio album ‘Knucklehead Circus’ in Winter 2021. A joyous\, uplifting and fun album full of compelling energy and intoxicating rhythm on which ‘OBD’ continue to innovate within their tradition while faithfully revealing its essence. SUMMARY:FREDERICA HALL: One Blood at the Precipice
DESCRIPTION:Learn More\n\n\n\n\n\nFREDERICA HALL: ONE BLOOD AT THE PRECIPICE \nApril 13 – June 8\, 2024 in the Project Gallery \nPerformance: Mysterious Orphic Songs of Whales\, April 13\, 6 pm \nArtist Talk: June 6\, 6:30 pm \n\nFlagstaff artist Frederica Hall engages a multi-disciplinary approach to visual arts and performance art\, informed by reflections on challenging matters of present times.\n\n“As a creative I look for an inquiry that is relevant to myself and the state of the world\, something that can engage me deeply. In 2000 I had the opportunity to go to Australia\, camping and painting for a few months\, I went to Uluru and met the grandson of the head of the Uluru tribe and spent a day following him around Uluru stopping at sacred sites where he traditional could share some ancient stories with me and my husband. His stories taught me that there is only  ‘One Blood’ between all species\, and that we are all woven together in this living breath of the creator. Every being is equally essential in this great dream time tapestry.”

SUMMARY:FRANCISCO GONZÁLEZ CASTRO: DOES NOT SAY «I»\, BUT DOES «I»: BODIES\, LIMITS & TRANSGRESSIONS
DESCRIPTION:Learn More\n\n\n\n\n\nFRANCISCO GONZÁLEZ CASTRO: DOES NOT SAY «I»\, BUT DOES «I»: BODIES\, LIMITS & TRANSGRESSIONS \nAPRIL 13 – JUNE 8\, 2024 \nOPENING RECEPTION SATURDAY\, APRIL 13 \n\nMembers Preview 5 – 6 pm\nArtist Talk 6 – 6:30 pm\nPublic Reception 6 – 8 pm\n\n\n\nMixing genres of video\, performance\, and drawing\, Francisco González Castro’s work examines problems related to territorial borders\, social inequalities\, and bodily transgressions. The project title refers to German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche’s (1844-1900) existentialist quote that begins\, “The body is a great intelligence\,” (Thus Spoke Zarathustra\, 1883)\, and infers that the human body and soul are one. This title is illuminated in Castro’s own artistic philosophy\, which confronts the body\, people who reject the body\, and how the body is approached as subject and identity. Castro’s personal bodily transgressions and tests of endurance are vehicles for his discourse about geographic landscapes and political borders. It is within this integration of life-and-art\, body-and-spirit\, that we intend to immerse the audience in this physically ambitious and psychologically profound exhibition by Castro at Coconino Center for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Flagstaff Music Theatre Presents: Urinetown
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nA sidesplitting sendup of greed\, love\, revolution (and musicals!)\, in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. \nWinner of three Tony Awards\, three Outer Critics Circle Awards\, two Lucille Lortel Awards and two Obie Awards\, Urinetown is a hilarious musical satire of the legal system\, capitalism\, social irresponsibility\, populism\, environmental collapse\, privatization of natural resources\, bureaucracy\, municipal politics\, and musical theatre itself! Hilariously funny and touchingly honest\, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective on one of America’s greatest art forms. \nIn a Gotham-like city\, a terrible water shortage\, caused by a 20-year drought\, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities\, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people\, a hero decides that he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! \nInspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill\, Urinetown is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be\, Urinetown catapults the “comedic romp” into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective\, wickedly modern wit and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter. \nSave 10% with membership! Members use UT24 as their promo code prefix (followed by unique member number).
