SUMMARY:House of Waters
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n“One of the most unique groups you will ever come across . . . I can only describe their sound as being a sound which one has longed to hear without truly realising it.” (The Bubble) \n“In today’s world\, there are no musical boundaries\,” says Max ZT of ‘House of Waters\,’ a trio that makes those words come alive as they incorporate elements of West-African\, jazz\, psychedelic\, indie rock\, classical and world music into their astonishingly unique sound. \nThe “Jimi Hendrix of the Hammered Dulcimer” (NPR)\, Max ZT is an innovator of an instrument rarely heard in contemporary music. With roots in Irish folk music\, Max has studied in Senegal\, where he trained with the Cissoko Griot family\, and India\, where he studied under the santoor master Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. His unorthodox playing style has been a pioneering force in revolutionizing dulcimer techniques. \nMoto Fukushima is a recognized master of the six-string bass. With a background in jazz improvisation\, Western classical music and the music of South America\, Moto’s playing is a combination of finesse\, subtlety\, and power that leaves audiences “slack-jawed in awe.” (Jazz Wise) Together they work with a variety of different drummers and percussionists from Antonio Sanchez (Pat Matheny)\, to Larnell Lewis (Snarky Puppy)\, to Richie Barshay (Esperanza Spalding)\, to Juan Chiavassa. (Mike Stern) \nHouse of Waters’ highly anticipated upcoming album will be released in this upcoming fall 2023\, on Snarky Puppy’s GroundUP Music label and features Antonio Sanchez on drums with special guests Mike Stern (guitar) and Priya Darshini (vocals). Produced by Guy Eckstine (Herbie Hancock\, Chris Botti)\, House of Waters will tour the album throughout the country. These prolific composers have worked together for sixteen years\, and have been making gorgeous music since the beginning. Their eponymous 2016 album\, House of Waters (GroundUP Music)\, debuted at #2 on the iTunes World Music Charts. All About Jazz calls it\, “A rare and beautiful gem\,” while TimeOut NY calls their performances\, “A sight to behold.” House of Waters has scored an Emmy-winning documentary (ESPN)\, and recently re-scored three 100+ year-old French Dadaist-Era silent films in partnership with GroundUP Music and Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas. \nThey have received the South Arts Jazz Road Grant and have an extensive touring history around the world. Having shared the stage with influential musicians including Pandit Ravi Shankar\, Victor Wooten\, Tinariwen\, Snarky Puppy\, Karsh Kale\, and more: “House of Waters is a band that is bending the very fabric of the musical universe as we know it.” (Onstage Review) \nSave 10% with membership! SUMMARY:Chris Pureka
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nIt’s rare for an artist to bridge the divide between critical acclaim and dedicated fan engagement. Chris Pureka is a Portland-based singer-songwriter whose body of work has resonated deeply with these seemingly disparate milieus. Their music has straddled the folk\, americana and indie rock genres over the course of their 20-year career\, and over that time\, their bold vulnerability in processing the intimacies of life in song has struck a chord with those listeners who crave authenticity and depth. \nChris’s elegant emotionality as a vocalist and their flair as a lyricist have garnered them favorable comparisons to Chan Marshall\, Bruce Springsteen\, and Patty Griffin. Over many years of touring on both sides of the Atlantic\, they have shared the stage with such diverse and esteemed artists as The Lumineers\, Gregory Alan Isakov\, The Cowboy Junkies\, Haley Heynderickx\, and Ani DiFranco. They have had their songs featured on such television shows as Brothers and Sisters\, Covert Affairs and Shameless and well as a song featured in the Sundance featured indie film\, The Royal Road. Along the way\, Chris has remained truly independent\, selling nearly 50\,000 albums through their own label\, Sad Rabbit Records. \nSpecial guest Avery Marshall is a music maker from Tulsa\, Oklahoma. With conversational song-writing\, he sings about love and what it means to be human. \nSave 10% with membership! Members use CP23 as their promo code prefix (followed by unique member number). SUMMARY:Northern Arizona Immigration Legal Services Presents: Home Is Somewhere Else
DESCRIPTION:This fundraising event blends stories of several immigrant experiences. It opens with a brief introduction to Northern Arizona Immigration Legal Services followed by the screening of Home Is Somewhere Else\, an 88-minute animated documentary film by Carlos Hagerman and Jorge Villalobos. After the film\, which is in both English and Spanish with subtitles\, director Carlos Hagerman will answer questions from the audience. \nHome Is Somewhere Else is a fascinating animated feature documentary providing a window into the hearts and minds of immigrant youth and their undocumented families. The film features three personal stories about immigrant youth to highlight the complexities and challenges they face today. Voiced by the actual children and their families\, the stories are woven together by spoken word poet Lalo “El Deportee”\, the film’s host and MC whose vibrant “Spanglish” breaks codes\, switches standards\, and pushes the viewer to decipher his poems. Each story has its own unique visual animation style drawn by three different teams. The animation allows us to truly see and feel these characters’ worst nightmares\, alongside their colorful hopes and dreams for a better future. SUMMARY:Humanitarian Activist Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Panel discussion with prominent humanitarian activists from Southern Arizona: Dora Rodriguez\, Dr. Scott Warren\, Reverend John Fife\, & Mike Wilson. Moderated by Robert Neustadt\, Ph.D. \nDora Rodríguez fled death squads in her native El Salvador and tried to cross the border in 1980. Of the 26 people in her group who attempted to cross the Sonoran Desert of AZ\, 13 perished. Dora herself was nearly dead when the group was found by Border Patrol. An advocate for compassionate treatment of immigrants\, Dora co-founded a migrant shelter / resource center in Sasabe\, Sonora\,  Casa de la Esperanza\, and an organization\, Salvavision\, that provides would-be immigrants with the means to sustain their families without crossing the border. For more information about Dora’s story see: https://www.kold.com/2019/05/10/doras-story-woman-recounts-deadly-journey-find-new-life-america/ \nDr. Scott Warren\, who holds a Ph.D. in geography\, has spent countless hours patrolling the deserts around Ajo\, Arizona caching water\, food\, blankets\, and offering first aid to people in need as a volunteer for No More Deaths / No más muertes. Scott was arrested by Border Patrol in Ajo in January 2018 by agents who were staking out the NMD base camp while two undocumented patients were receiving medical and humanitarian assistance. Scott was facing 20 years in prison for “harboring” and “furthering the illegal presence of ‘illegal aliens’\,” in other words\, he gave them food\, water\, and sheets. Scott Warren was tried twice in federal court. The first hearing ended in a hung jury\,  and he was acquitted in the second trial in Nov. 2019. No More Deaths’ slogan is: Humanitarian Aid is Never a Crime. \nReverend John Fife is the former pastor of Southside Presbyterian Church in Tucson\, AZ. In the 1980s\, when he realized that Salvadoran and Guatemalan refugees were being detained by US authorities and returned to face US-supported death squads\, he and others felt that they had the ethical obligation to smuggle people into the country. After their efforts were challenged by US authorities\, Reverend Fife and others founded the Sanctuary Movement—they lodged refugees in houses of worship. The church hosted some 13\,000 asylum seekers\, sometimes with up to a 100 sleeping on the floor in one night. Reverend Fife was indicted for alleged violations of US immigration law and faced years of incarceration in a Federal Penitentiary. Fife and others developed the concept of “civil initiative” to distinguish their actions from “civil disobedience\,” because in their view it was the US government that was failing to uphold the law. The Sanctuary Movement grew from one church to over 500 congregations all over the United States. Years later\, when border crossers started to die in the desert of the Tucson Sector\, John Fife and others co-founded humanitarian aid organizations\, such as the Samaritan Patrol\, No More Deaths / No más muertes\, Tucson Samaritans\, and Humane Borders. \nMike Wilson is a member of the Tohono O’odham Nation\, a tribe whose ancestral homeland is bisected by the US/Mexico border in southern Arizona. In 2002 Mike became aware of the masses of Latin American border crossers who were perishing on the Nation and he began leaving water to save lives. He later began collaborating with the humanitarian group\, Humane Borders\, who was not allowed to work on the Nation. Wilson faced opposition from his church\, his tribal government\, and the US government\, and yet he continued and expanded his efforts to include filling water barrels for migrants. He was depicted in this role in the (still relevant) documentary\, Crossing Arizona (2005). Mike has continued to help border crossers in many different capacities over the years depending on current needs. For a time\, Mike and his wife picked up asylum seekers who had been dumped by Border Patrol at the Greyhound Station in Tucson and brought them back to their house for meals\, showers\, and sleep\, until they were prepared to continue their journeys elsewhere in the country. Currently Mike Wilson is co-directing\, along with Vicky Westover\, a documentary entitled Whose Land? O’odham Land!\, and co-authoring a book with Jose Antonio Lucero\, What Side Are You On?  A Tohono O’odham Journey Across Borders. \nDate/Time: November 2\, 2023\, 6:30 pm \nFREE EVENT \ntom kiefer: el sueño americano / the american dream

With his highly individualistic approach to music making and the music industry\, one that cherishes intimacy\, community\, mystery\, and spontaneity; his brilliance has captivated fans and made Bonnie one of our most influential and beloved songsmiths. \nBonnie “Prince” Billy’s latest offerings include the 2019’s I Made a Place\, 2020’s Superwolves (with Matt Sweeney) and Blind Date Party\, a collaborative album consisting of covers made with Bill Callahan during the pandemic lockdown. 2023 will see the release of his first children’s book\, based on the song “Shorty’s Ark” (from Superwolves)\, as well as a new proper BPB record of new songs. \n\n\n\n\nLaurel Premo is known for her rhythmically deep and rapt delivery of roots music on fiddle\, guitar\, and vocals. Her solo performances dive deep into traditional and new fiddle music\, musically revealing a bloom of underlying harmonic drones\, minimalist repetition\, and rich polyrhythms. Presenting these sounds on finger style electric guitar and fiddle\, Premo fully leans in to the archaic melodies and in-between intonations that connect folk sounds to the mystic and unknown. \n\n\n\nSave 10% with membership! Members use BP23 as their promo code prefix. DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Saturday\, September 23 \nMembers Preview 5-6 pm \nTom Kiefer in Conversation with Liz Allen 6 – 6:30 pm \nPublic Reception 6-8 \nTOM KIEFER: EL SUEÑO AMERICANO / THE AMERICAN DREAM \nSEPTEMBER 23 – DECEMBER 23\, 2023 \nTom Kiefer: El Sueño Americano / The American Dream is a photographic documentation of the personal belongings carried by migrants and those seeking asylum that were seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection at a processing facility near the artist’s home in Ajo\, Arizona\, about 40 miles from the U.S./Mexico border. U.S. border agents deemed these belongings as non-essential or potentially lethal. Kiefer asks the viewer to consider these photographs as untold and unknown stories\, markers of human journeys cut short\, creating a personal connection for the viewer that extends compassion and empathy to those who make the dangerous journey across the desert to seek a better life.

SUMMARY:Mama's Broke
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nMama’s Broke have spent the past eight years in a near-constant state of transience\, pounding the transatlantic tour trail. They’ve brought their dark\, fiery folk-without-borders sound to major festivals and DIY punk houses alike\, absorbing traditions from their maritime home in Eastern Canada all the way to Ireland and Indonesia. Nowhere is the duo’s art-in-motion approach more apparent than on their long-awaited sophomore record Narrow Line (May 13\, 2022 on Free Dirt Records); it’s the sound of nowhere in particular\, yet woven with a rich synthesis of influences that knows no borders. It earned them a JUNO nomination for Traditional Roots Album of the Year 2022. The eleven songs on Narrow Line burrow deeply\, with close harmony duets\, commanding vocals\, and poignant contemplations on cycles of life\, including birth and death. Tinges of Americana stand side-by-side with the ghosts of Eastern European fiddle tunes and ancient a cappella ballad singing\, melding into an unusually accessible dark-folk sound. A careful listen of Narrow Line invokes an ephemeral sense of place—whether real or imagined—inviting us to take comfort in the infinite possibilities of life\, whether or not we ever choose to settle down. \nFor a group defined by constant touring\, it’s not surprising that the two artists that make up Mama’s Broke\, Lisa Maria and Amy Lou Keeler\, met on the road. As Lisa remembers it\, “Amy was driving her old Mercedes from Montreal to Nova Scotia and I was looking for a ride. We spent the 17 hours in the car talking almost exclusively about music. By the time we reached Halifax we started playing together\, and within a week or two became a band.” Both coming out of traveling communities that are focused on music and protest\, the two owe the way in which they move through the world to the integrated and self-sustaining nature of DIY culture and activism. It was a busy life that took them on a roundabout annual touring schedule running between Canada\, the United States\, Ireland\, the UK\, and Europe. In each country\, they built grassroots DIY communities to support their music or moved along the pathways of communal organizing that sustained other touring artists. \nThe driving force behind this band is – and has always been – the commitment to challenge borders between people\, places\, and traditions; while encouraging freedom of expression and community through music. \n Save 10% with membership! SUMMARY:Greenhouse Productions Presents: SUSTO
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n\nSUSTO will return with My Entire Life July 28 via New West Records. The 12-song set was produced by Wolfgang Zimmerman (Band of Horses) and SUSTO’s Justin Osborne and Johnny Delaware. My Entire Life follows their critically acclaimed 2021 album Time in the Sun which Holler said “provides proof that Osborne and his bandmates are an important voice in today’s conflicted world\,” while No Depression called it a “fluid and engaging listen.” Ink 19 said “It’s a great example of SUSTO’s ability to create true lyrical and musical masterpieces so fresh you simply cannot turn it off” while the Bitter Southerner named it one of “The Best Southern Albums of 2021.” \n  \nA season of drastic change is what brought SUSTO frontman Justin Osborne to the band’s new album. There was a divorce\, difficulties re-building his band after the pandemic\, and the pain and helplessness of witnessing family members struggle with addiction and mental illness. Despite these challenges. Justin ultimately found himself in a new landscape\, with new love and a deeper perspective\, all of which is masterfully projected into My Entire Life. As a whole\, the album documents Justin’s personal journey through highs and lows in his life\, with many of the details on full display. He narrates the demise and aftermath of an almost decade long relationship\, while celebrating the joy of falling in love\, and the hopefulness of starting over. \n  \nToday\, Paste Magazine premiered the video for the album’s title track and lead single\, “My Entire Life\,” a song with an urgency “to keep living.” Director Luke Pilgrim says\, “We at Sozo Bear Films ventured into the relatively unknown world of AI art. We took inspiration from the lyrics\, SUSTO’s entire catalog\, as well as Justin’s previous musical endeavors to create visuals that represent themes from his entire life. We used stable diffusion to create a mind-bending psychedelic experience. Stable Diffusion is a type of deep learning generative neural network with the ability to prompt\, render and process AI imagery.” \n  \nSave 10% with membership!
