SUMMARY:Christine Cassano: QUADRIVIUM
DESCRIPTION:CHRISTINE CASSANO: QUADRIVIUM \nJune 29 – September 28\, 2024 in the Project Gallery \nQUADRIVIUM is a sound instrument as well as a soundscape installation. A light push from the hand engages the forty-nine suspended bronze pieces to play sound and create a mediative environment—a space where matter\, energy and vibration connect. The installation can be experienced by walking around it\, sitting nearby or by laying back on the seated platform underneath it. Its title\, “Quadrivium” is the Latin word meaning “where four roads meet—a crossroads” and references a curriculum established during the Renaissance era consisting of four subjects: Arithmetic\, Geometry\, Harmonics & Astronomy. SUMMARY:Alejandro Brittes
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n\nHailed by the Boston Globe as a “premier exponent of Chamamé\,” composer and researcher Alejandro Brittes explores his chamamé heritage\, an ancestral rhythm connecting us with the Earth and the Universe through music and dance\, which was born of the encounter between the ritual musicality of the indigenous Guaraní and Baroque music. Having toured extensively in South America and Europe\, Brittes recently completed a Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation Iber Exchange-supported 2023 U.S. East Coast Tour: Library of Congress\, Georgetown University\, Hamilton College\, The Trust PAC (PA)\, Levitt Pavilion (CT)\, and other venues. \nAlejandro’s concerts establish a connection with the earth\, with the origins of the music of his home region and with the universe\, in primordial verticality. His trademark is to employ his accordion as if it were a bandoneón\, in conversation between the left and right hands\, achieving that the instrument be utilized in its highest performance. The basses of the left hand are masterfully explored\, because according to Alejandro\, the low basses connect us with the earth\, and the right hand button keyboard\, beyond providing melody to the music\, elevates us to the Universe. \nSave 10% with membership! Members use AB24 as their promo code prefix (followed by unique member number). SUMMARY:Rodrigo de Toledo: Kin Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Rodrigo de Toledo: Kin Artist Talk \nDate/Time: November 21\, 2024\, 6:30 pm \nFREE EVENT \nKin celebrates fantastical ancestors on large acrylic paintings\, transported from the walls of an otherworldly and ageless temple. Portraits of entities staring from a mythological realm. On a visually distressed canvas surface\, de Toledo disrupts his own pre-established iconographic vocabulary and the visual language of comics and cartoons\, using playfully fluid energetic graphisms. \nRodrigo de Toledo | Goddess | Acrylic on canvas | detail \nRodrigo de Toledo: Kin

SUMMARY:Greenhouse Productions Presents: The Songs & Stories Of John Prine featuring Billy Prine
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n\nBilly Prine is a natural-born storyteller just like his late\, great brother John Prine was a natural-born songwriter. John was a great communicator of the human experience whittled down to the best words. As an example\, fans will get to hear the first time John played his classic song “Paradise” for their father as the family sat around the kitchen table. \nSongs are stories\, novellas\, if you will\, and stories often become songs. It is only fitting that in the course of each show during this tour\, that Billy relates – as only he can – the stories that surround the songs of his dear brother John. \n\n\nSave 10% with membership! SUMMARY:Interference Series Presents: Chuck Johnson with special guests The Caverns
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n\nOn his new album Sun Glories\, Oakland-based musician\, composer\, and producer Chuck Johnson explores themes of time\, memory\, and illusion through his unique blend of pedal steel\, synths\, organs\, strings\, and drums. Opening track “Teleos” explores the linear and cyclical qualities of time itself through episodic sections and motifs\, which evoke the bittersweet relief and nostalgia that flood the senses with the arrival of the first warm and sunny day after a long\, dark\, and rainy stretch of winter. According to Johnson\, the piece “took a surprising turn when I started adding guitar textures that recall the music I played and listened to when I was much younger.” Evocative fields of guitars and pedal steel conspire to spark an intoxicating palimpsest of memories\, before being ushered forward by an improvisatory and propulsive drum performance from Ryan Jewell. \nThe Caverns are a pedal steel\, bass\, and drums trio. Travis Bruner\, on pedal steel\, weaves sparse vocals in with the steel over an intricate and melodic rhythm section built by Brian Gregory on bass and Matt Tress on drums. Improvisation is the guiding force\, and the feel moves from meditative to deep grooves\, constantly transforming like clouds moving across the Arizona sky. The lyrics\, inspired by everything from the band members’ shared mission of fatherhood to the political upheaval of our times\, are concise and pointed. As a recent music critic said on instagram\, The Caverns make some “campfire under the moon coyote howlin’ old western psychedelic ambient stuff.” \nSave 10% with membership! Use unique member number at checkout. SUMMARY:Closing Reception featuring: (un)certainty\, Figure to the Ground\, and Stars/Dark
DESCRIPTION:Closing Reception featuring: (un)certainty\, Figure to the Ground\, and Stars/Dark \nPerformances by Abby Fisher\, with Owen Davis and Rob Wallace \n\n(un)certainty (2024) by Lawton Hall\, Figure to Ground by Andrea Mazzariello\, and Stars/Dark are three pieces that will be performed in this concert\, each offering a unique exploration of rhythm and complexity. (un)certainty\, scored for solo marimba and electronics\, delves into the tension between surety and doubt\, inspired by advances in particle physics. Its five movements range from bold\, frantic chords to quiet reflection\, culminating in a rhythmic battle between marimba and electronics. Figure to Ground\, written for Abby Fisher\, simplifies rhythmic complexity into a single syncopated figure\, gradually dissolving the pulse until a late melody reasserts it. Both pieces demand courageous performances\, inviting listeners into deep contemplation of time and structure. Stars/Dark was conceived first as a text and then as a co-composed musical piece. Rob Wallace’s original poem draws from a number of sources as inspiration\, including the lyrics of Robert Hunter\, and the cosmos-related culture of Flagstaff and the Colorado Plateau. The music sets the text in a dark sky of non-metered metallic sounds and drones\, punctuated by a section of drum-based metered explorations. \nWONDER: Social Surrealism in Contemporary Art

SUMMARY:Greenhouse Productions Presents: Tommy Castro & The Painkillers
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n“The hardest thing to do\,” says internationally beloved soul-blues rocker Tommy Castro\, “is be yourself\, take some chances and bring your fans along with you.” Throughout his long\, constantly evolving career\, guitarist\, singer and songwriter Tommy Castro has always remained true to himself while exploring\, growing and creating new music\, and he has taken his thousands of devoted fans right along with him. Since his solo debut in 1994\, he’s made 16 albums—the last seven for Alligator—each its own unique chapter in the book of Tommy Castro. Ranging from horn-fueled R&B to piping hot blues to fiery\, stripped-down rock ‘n’ roll\, each release is solidly built upon Castro’s unshakable musical foundation—a dynamic mix of 1960s-influenced guitar-fueled blues\, testifying Memphis-soaked blue-eyed soul and Latin-tinged East San Jose funk\, all driven by Castro’s grab-you-by-the-collar vocals and passionate guitar work. Blues Revue declared\, “Tommy Castro can do no wrong.” \nFor Castro’s new album\, a roots music odyssey entitled Tommy Castro Presents A Bluesman Came To Town\, he tells a timeless story. This special project was composed by Castro along with Grammy Award-winning producer Tom Hambridge. Through its 13 songs\, A Bluesman Came To Town tells the tale of a young man working on his family farm who gets bitten by the blues bug. He masters the guitar and heads out on the road seeking fame and fortune\, only to find what he’s left behind is the treasure he’s been looking for. Each memorable song—from the blistering title track to the pleading Child Don’t Go to the hopeful I Caught A Break to the emotional Blues Prisoner—stands on its own\, as well as contributing to the larger story. \n“I like to keep things fresh and interesting\,” says Castro\, “Tom and I have talked about making a record together for a long time. Collaborating with him was even better than I imagined. I had an outline for the story and then Tom and I talked it out and the songs just started to organically grow out of each other.” Castro continues\, “A Bluesman Came To Town isn’t a story about me. It’s pulled from some of my friends’ and my experiences though. I’ve seen first-hand for a lot of years what it’s like out there on the road.” \nThe road has always been Castro’s home away from home. He’ll instantly ignite a crowd\, turn them into loyal fans and then keep those fans coming back for more. He has traveled hundreds of thousands of miles and performed thousands of gigs\, leading his bands at clubs\, concert halls\, and festivals all over the world. Famed guitarist Joe Bonamassa says\, “Tommy has always been top of the heap among blues guitar players. He always puts on a great show.” \nBorn in San Jose\, California in 1955\, Tommy Castro first picked up a guitar at age 10. He fell under the spell of Elvin Bishop\, Taj Mahal\, Mike Bloomfield and other blues artists of the day. Almost every major rock and soul act\, from Ike and Tina Turner to Janis Joplin to the J. Geils Band to Tower Of Power\, toured through the area\, and Castro was at every show. He saw John Lee Hooker\, Albert King\, and Buddy Guy and Junior Wells at the same local blues bar\, JJ’s\, where he often jammed\, dreaming of one day busting out. Mixing the blues and rock and roll he loved and the soul music he heard blasting from lowriders in his neighborhood Tommy started to create his own personal sound and style. He honed his guitar skills and intense\, gritty vocals\, learning how to capture an audience as he performed on San Francisco’s highly competitive club scene. As his reputation spread\, Tommy played in a variety of Bay Area bands\, soon making a name for himself as a hotter-than-hot live artist bursting at the seams with talent. In 1985\, he was recruited to become lead singer and guitarist for the regionally popular blues band NiteCry\, gigging regularly throughout Northern California. Castro joined Warner Brothers’ artists The Dynatones in the late 1980s\, performing all over the country. He formed the first Tommy Castro Band in 1992 and has not stopped touring since. In 1995\, soon after releasing his first album on Blind Pig Records\, The Tommy Castro Band was selected as the house band for three seasons on NBC Television’s Comedy Showcase (airing right after Saturday Night Live). The show brought him in front of millions of viewers every week and cemented his reputation as a not-to-be-missed\, nationally touring live performer. \nAfter a series of successful releases on the Blind Pig\, Telarc and 33rd Street labels\, Tommy Castro joined Alligator Records in 2009. His label debut\, Hard Believer\, was released to massive popular and critical acclaim. With the album\, Castro won four of his six career Blues Music Awards\, including the coveted B.B. King Entertainer Of The Year Award (the very highest award a blues performer can receive). In 2012\, Castro stripped his music down to its raw essence\, creating a high-energy\, larger-than-life sound with the formation of The Painkillers. Tommy Castro & The Painkillers’ initial release\, The Devil You Know\, was embraced by his legion of fans and discovered by hordes of new ones. With the current version of The Painkillers (bassist Randy McDonald\, drummer Bowen Brown and keyboardist Michael Emerson)\, Castro released Method To My Madness in 2015\, Stompin’ Ground in 2017\, and the irresistible Killin’ It–Live in 2019\, with critics shouting praise and admirers cheering the group’s every move. The band has coalesced into one of the telepathically tightest units Castro has ever assembled\, making them one of the most in-demand live roots music acts performing today\, delivering soul-shaking\, muscular music. \nCastro’s relentless road-dog approach—gig after gig\, night after night—has won him loyal\, lifelong fans everywhere he plays. The Washington Post says Castro is “phenomenal and funky” with “soulful vocals and inspired blues guitar.” The San Francisco Chronicle describes Castro’s music as\, “funky Southern soul\, big city blues and classic rock…silvery guitar licks that simultaneously sound familiar and fresh.” No Depression says “Castro plays gritty\, string-bending blues like a runaway train…a glorious blend that rocks the soul and lifts the spirits.” \nUpon release of A Bluesman Came To Town\, Castro will hit the road with The Painkillers\, performing fan favorites as well as songs from the new album. “I’ve made seven albums for Alligator\,” Castro says\, “and I’ve never made the same record twice. I will always try to be my most authentic self. I give it all I’ve got every time we hit the stage!” \nSave 10% with membership!
