SUMMARY:EVER PRESENT: Guillermo Galindo & José Luis Sotero Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:5:00 – 6:00pm Members Preview\n6:00pm Artists’ Talk\n6:00 – 8:00pm Public Reception \nEVER PRESENT: Guillermo Galindo & José Luis Sotero presents two Mexican artists whose work reflects upon their experiences of migration. Guillermo Galindo (San Francisco\, CA)\, an acclaimed Mexican-born artist and U.S. citizen\, composer\, and performer\, shares his newest project Sonic Biogenesis\, an installation commenting on genetics\, mobility\, and the environment. José Luis Sotero (Nogales\, Sonora\, MX)\, a self-taught Mexican painter\, presents his recent paintings El lado oscuro de la migracion (the dark side of migration) using pictorial surrealism to depict the stories of people who seek refuge from violence and poverty in hope of a better life. While both artists have long worked with themes of migration\, their work reflects distinctly different perspectives and expressions. This exhibition is mindful of the important role of immigration at the center of the American experience\, and current conversations on immigration taking place in the U.S.\, with increased awareness in border states such as Arizona.

SUMMARY:Christine Cassano: QUADRIVIUM
DESCRIPTION:CHRISTINE CASSANO: QUADRIVIUM \nJune 29 – September 28\, 2024 in the Project Gallery \nQUADRIVIUM is a sound instrument as well as a soundscape installation. A light push from the hand engages the forty-nine suspended bronze pieces to play sound and create a mediative environment—a space where matter\, energy and vibration connect. The installation can be experienced by walking around it\, sitting nearby or by laying back on the seated platform underneath it. Its title\, “Quadrivium” is the Latin word meaning “where four roads meet—a crossroads” and references a curriculum established during the Renaissance era consisting of four subjects: Arithmetic\, Geometry\, Harmonics & Astronomy. SUMMARY:EQUUS: The Horse Rendered in Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:TANNER JENSEN\, RON TOAHANI JACKSON\, & KATHY TAYLOR \nJuly 8 – September 2\, 2023 \nOpening Reception: July 8 \n\nMembers’ Preview: 5-6 pm\nArtist Gallery Talks: 6 pm\nPublic Reception: 6-8 pm\n\nClosing Reception: September 2\, 6-8 pm \nEQUUS: The Horse Rendered in Contemporary Art aims to transcend conventions of Western American art\, placing the viewer in a liminal space to contemplate the threshold between traditional depictions and contemporary perspectives. Equus (Latin term for horse) brings together the creative work of three accomplished artists—Tanner Jensen\, Ron Toahani Jackson\, and Kathy Taylor—who share a kinship of mutual respect with\, and admiration for\, the horse: free and unbridled in spirit and form. \nTanner Jensen (Greenville\, North Carolina). Jensen has been enthralled with horses since she was a child; since then\, they have served as a muse\, the source of inspiration for her creative practice. “It’s a mystery to me why the horse lends itself to my search for understanding\, but it does. Through these animals\, I have learned to be a much better human being. They’ve taught me patience\, given me lessons about life and death\, lead me through grief\, and are a constant reminder to stay present and to delight in this miracle of a world” (tannerjensenfineart.com). Before moving to North Carolina\, Jensen was a resident of Flagstaff intermittently since 1976. \nRon Toahani Jackson (Tségháhoodzání or Window Rock\, Navajo Nation\, Arizona). Toahani is an artist\, photographer and animal rights activist working to preserve the last free wild roaming horses on his ancestral lands. The artist describes the intimate experiences he has with the wild horses that inspire his work: “When you sit in the landscape with the horses\, they will come up and surround you. They get close\, just a few feet from you. They are spiritual; it is a spiritual experience.” Toahani’s monotypes are one-of-a-kind ink or painted images\, created on a substrate and transferred to a paper surface\, oftentimes embellished with additional pencil marks or textures. Toahani’s videography of wild horses is displayed on the exterior of Coconino Center for the Arts during evening viewing events. \nKathy Taylor (Phoenix\, Arizona). Taylor reflects on the development of the horse as a reoccurring motif and as part of her intuitive approach to mixed-media painting and sculpture: “When the first horse emerged in one of my paintings\, it was no surprise to find out that these beautiful symbols of strength\, freedom\, and power were just what I needed at the time. Horse had chosen me! While I paint\, the horses meet me in that place where the invisible world meets visible reality bringing with them messages of hope and healing” (Voyage Phoenix\, October 18\, 2018). Taylor attributes her abstract artistic influences on her formative years living in Southern California in the 1960s.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Paula Jean Rice 'Transformation & Transcendence' and Jihan Gearon 'TRICKY'
DESCRIPTION:Member Preview: 5pm to 6pm\nGeneral Public: 6pm to 8pm\nSuggested Donation: $10 \nJoin us for the opening reception of two incredible exhibitions. \nIn the Main Gallery: \nPaula Jean Rice: Transformation & Transcendence is a retrospective exhibition of visionary ceramic sculpture. The collection includes four decades of Rice’s work from public and private collections\, offering a comprehensive survey of the artist’s complete oeuvre. Presented as a multi-media exhibition\, the three-dimensional sculptures and relief wall-mounted pieces are accompanied with recent audio recordings of Rice sharing the stories and inspirations behind each series. The artist’s captivating recollections provide the audience with poetic insight on her life’s work. \nPaula Jean Rice is a nationally renowned ceramic sculptor and educator\, whose interests include the nature and mystery of the human body and our place in the cosmos. Rice is Professor Emerita of Art at Northern Arizona University\, where she has received myriad awards for excellence in teaching and creative work. Living at 7000 ft elevation in Flagstaff\, Arizona—location of the discovery of the dwarf planet Pluto—she is a passionate observer of the clear night skies. \nIn the Project Gallery: \nJihan Gearon’s TRICKY includes and builds on the artist’s November 2022 exhibition SURRENDER: Quarantine Questions | Pandemic Wisdom. Surrender – to surrender\, to give oneself up – was the key theme of that body of work. In surrendering\, Gearon is learning to believe in herself; give and receive love more deeply; foster excitement instead of fear; and transform bitterness\, isolation\, and ego into compassion\, wisdom\, and awareness that all is connected. \nBut surrendering can be tricky. What about all those parts of ourselves we don’t want to be\, let alone surrender ourselves to? What of doubt\, jealousy\, pride\, fear? How can we navigate those chaotic waters? Previous and new paintings will offer guides\, warnings\, and experiences through tricky situations.

SUMMARY:From Darkness to Light Radiation Mask Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:“From Darkness to Light\,” an exhibit of cancer treatment radiation masks transformed into artistic sculptures of courage\, determination\, and beauty.  Each custom-mesh mask was molded to the face of a cancer patient for use during radiation treatment of the head and neck.  These masks\, which held the patients’ heads and bodies still for treatment\, have been reworked by local artists and made into symbols of resolve and endurance in the face of adversity.  There is a Wonder Woman mask\, a Harvest Warrior mask\, and masks which honor prayer\, the act of “pushing through\,” light\, and the path of healing. Each mask honors an individual’s great effort to heal their body and every mask also honors the challenges faced by all cancer patients. \nThe exhibit was organized by the Cancer Support Community of Arizona\, a local non-profit which provides free services to cancer patients\, their families\, and caregivers. Services include support groups\, social activities\, mind/body therapies\, nutritional counseling\, and educational seminars among others.  Photos of the masks and information about the artists and patients who inspired them can be found at https://buff.ly/2LMM7XV.

SUMMARY:25 MILLION STITCHES: ONE STITCH\, ONE REFUGEE
DESCRIPTION:25 Million Stitches: One Stitch\, One Refugee was launched by Jennifer Kim Sohn as a global\, participatory art project to address the vast crisis of worldwide displacement. The concept was simple: one stitch of embroidery for each refugee. The project provides a beautifully resonant expression of art activism that raises awareness of the immense scope of people forcibly displaced from their homelands by violence and natural disasters. Since the medium involved basic stitching\, the project was able to attract a very diverse group of participants from 36 countries and from every state in the United States. The culmination of this global community effort resulted in a grand tapestry rich with images\, symbols and messages of solidarity\, hope and community all of which give the viewer a textural way to process and experience the enormity of 25 million people\, the number the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimated were refugees when the project commenced in May of 2019. \n\nLocation: CCA Main Gallery\nExhibition Dates: November 12\, 2022 – January 21\, 2023\nExhibition Website: 25millionstitches.com\nExhibition Instagram: instagram.com/25millionstitches\n\n25 Million Stitches\nExhibition Programming:\nSaturday\, November 12\nOpening Reception\n      CCA Members Preview 5-6 pm\n      Keynote Presentation by Jennifer Kim Sohn 6 pm FREE\n      Public Reception 6-8 pm \nSunday\, November 13\, 2 pm and 4 pm\nMaster Chorale of Flagstaff – Safe Harbor: Songs of Refuge & Home\nTickets at: https://coconinoarts.org/events/category/concerts/ \nThursday\, November 17\, 7-8:30 pm FREE\nRobert Neustadt presents “Re-Weaving the Social Fabric: Artisans Beyond Borders” \nSaturdays\, November 19\, December 10 & 17\, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm FREE\n“Community Voices through Digital Humanities: Archiving Personal Histories and the Migratory Experience” three-series workshop \nThursday\, December 1\, 7-8:30 pm FREE\nBjorn Krondorfer\, Ph.D. presents “Home & Identity: The Refugee Experience” panel discussion on global perspectives \nSaturday\, January 7\, 1-4 pm FREE\nTasha Miller Griffith presents “Mindful Mending” workshop for adults and seniors \nThursday\, January 12\, 7-8:30 pm FREE\nErika Hess\, Ph.D. and Robert Neustadt\, Ph.D. present “Learning On-Site: Service Learning and Experiential Education with Refugees in Greece” \nSaturday\, January 14\, 1-4 pm FREE\nTasha Miller Griffith presents “Stitching as Expression” youth workshop \nVisit https://coconinoarts.org/exhibitions/25-million-stitches-one-stitch-one-refugee/ for more details. \nWorkshop space is limited\, registration required
