SUMMARY:Canyon Movement Company Presents: In Between
DESCRIPTION:Learn More\nIn our thirtieth year\, Canyon Movement Company proudly presents The In-Between\, a modern dance exploration of change. The company has gone through a lot of changes in the last two years. And we are celebrating all that has come from it: new relationships\, new partnerships\, new dancers\, choreographers\, and stories told through movement. A special film of a live dance performance in the Grand Canyon with a live string quartet will be featured.  So in-between all of the holidays\, festivals\, and hum-drum of life\, the company along with guest artists will present an exploration of change through movement. \nSuggested donations at the door: $15/general\, $10/child-student\nCanyon Movement Company includes Breanna Lengyl\, Natalie Jones\, Danika Rudd\, Laura Covey\, and Zhuoting Wu with director Gina Darlington. Guest artists include Ahlers’ Dance\, Human Nature Dance Theatre\, Sedona Dance Academy\, Rebecca Whitehurst\, Daniel Cunningham\, and community youth dancers. \nThis performance is supported in part by funds from the City of Flagstaff and Creative Flagstaff\, and the Arizona Commission on the Arts with funds from the National Endowment for the Arts.

With roots in Irish folk music\, Max has studied in Senegal\, where he trained with the Cissoko Griot family\, and India\, where he studied under the santoor master Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. His unorthodox playing style has been a pioneering force in revolutionizing dulcimer techniques. \nMoto Fukushima is a recognized master of the six-string bass. With a background in jazz improvisation\, Western classical music and the music of South America\, Moto’s playing is a combination of finesse\, subtlety\, and power that leaves audiences “slack-jawed in awe.” (Jazz Wise) Together they work with a variety of different drummers and percussionists from Antonio Sanchez (Pat Matheny)\, to Larnell Lewis (Snarky Puppy)\, to Richie Barshay (Esperanza Spalding)\, to Juan Chiavassa. (Mike Stern) \nHouse of Waters’ highly anticipated upcoming album will be released in this upcoming fall 2023\, on Snarky Puppy’s GroundUP Music label and features Antonio Sanchez on drums with special guests Mike Stern (guitar) and Priya Darshini (vocals). DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nMama’s Broke have spent the past eight years in a near-constant state of transience\, pounding the transatlantic tour trail. They’ve brought their dark\, fiery folk-without-borders sound to major festivals and DIY punk houses alike\, absorbing traditions from their maritime home in Eastern Canada all the way to Ireland and Indonesia. Nowhere is the duo’s art-in-motion approach more apparent than on their long-awaited sophomore record Narrow Line (May 13\, 2022 on Free Dirt Records); it’s the sound of nowhere in particular\, yet woven with a rich synthesis of influences that knows no borders. It earned them a JUNO nomination for Traditional Roots Album of the Year 2022. The eleven songs on Narrow Line burrow deeply\, with close harmony duets\, commanding vocals\, and poignant contemplations on cycles of life\, including birth and death. Tinges of Americana stand side-by-side with the ghosts of Eastern European fiddle tunes and ancient a cappella ballad singing\, melding into an unusually accessible dark-folk sound. A careful listen of Narrow Line invokes an ephemeral sense of place—whether real or imagined—inviting us to take comfort in the infinite possibilities of life\, whether or not we ever choose to settle down.  \nFor a group defined by constant touring\, it’s not surprising that the two artists that make up Mama’s Broke\, Lisa Maria and Amy Lou Keeler\, met on the road. As Lisa remembers it\, “Amy was driving her old Mercedes from Montreal to Nova Scotia and I was looking for a ride. We spent the 17 hours in the car talking almost exclusively about music. By the time we reached Halifax we started playing together\, and within a week or two became a band.” Both coming out of traveling communities that are focused on music and protest\, the two owe the way in which they move through the world to the integrated and self-sustaining nature of DIY culture and activism. It was a busy life that took them on a roundabout annual touring schedule running between Canada\, the United States\, Ireland\, the UK\, and Europe. The 12-song set was produced by Wolfgang Zimmerman (Band of Horses) and SUSTO’s Justin Osborne and Johnny Delaware.
