SUMMARY:Flagstaff Music Theatre Presents: Urinetown
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nA sidesplitting sendup of greed\, love\, revolution (and musicals!)\, in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. \nWinner of three Tony Awards\, three Outer Critics Circle Awards\, two Lucille Lortel Awards and two Obie Awards\, Urinetown is a hilarious musical satire of the legal system\, capitalism\, social irresponsibility\, populism\, environmental collapse\, privatization of natural resources\, bureaucracy\, municipal politics\, and musical theatre itself! Hilariously funny and touchingly honest\, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective on one of America’s greatest art forms. \nIn a Gotham-like city\, a terrible water shortage\, caused by a 20-year drought\, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities\, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people\, a hero decides that he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! \nInspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill\, Urinetown is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be\, Urinetown catapults the “comedic romp” into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective\, wickedly modern wit and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter. \nSave 10% with membership! Members use UT24 as their promo code prefix (followed by unique member number). SUMMARY:Greenhouse Productions Presents: Brothers Reed
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nWith their comedic brotherly banter\, impeccable harmonic expression\, and widely varying influences\, a Brothers Reed performance will have you reflecting on lost lives and lovers\, laughing hysterically and leaving completely entertained. \nThe duo incorporates harmonica\, percussion\, into their live performances\, soothing your soul with songs that are familiar yet original. Whether they are finger picking their way through a lamentable ballad or bringing you around full-speed with a barn-burning bluegrass number\, The Brothers Reed are masters of their craft. \nDespite their brotherhood\, Aaron and Phil Reed didn’t start playing music together until five years ago after Phil left their hometown of St. Charles\, Missouri to join Aaron in the unsullied mountains of the American Northwest. The brothers family blend of folk encapsulates the grit and humor of Midwest life with the swagger and serenity of the west coast. Their style evokes finger picking folk singers of the 60’s and 70’s with a contemporary and boundless edge. Cultivated from years of performing in bands ranging from heavy metal to reggae and rock\, to punk\, country\, and funk\, their musical dichotomy is at the root of their diverse yet seamless folk-brand. \nThrough an exhaustive tour schedule that includes nearly 300 shows per year\, the Brothers Reed have quickly risen to regional renown and tour extensively throughout the U.S. With three studio albums released (Sick As Folk\, 2015; Monster In My Head\, 2016; Three\, 2018) a full band live release (Live at the Buckhunters Ball: Callahan\, CA\, 2017)\, and the latest “Caught in a Dream” 2019\, The Bros show no signs of slowing down anytime soon. \nSave 10% with membership! SUMMARY:Up Next Flagstaff & Happy Accidents! Presents: Sierra Bryan\, Gone Before Us\, Naming Our Monsters
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nUp Next Flagstaff at Coconino Center for the Arts showcases local emerging artists. This show in collaboration with Happy Accidents! \n\n\nSierra Bryan\, based out of Flagstaff\, AZ\, blends spunky-indie rock with warm\, folksy introspection – employing grungy electric guitars and beautiful cello arrangements alike. Her sound draws inspiration from other femme musicians such as Sharon Van Etten\, Beabadoobee\, and Liza Anne with musical influences from the likes of Gregory Alan Isakov and Joni Mitchell. \nHer 2020 debut album “Breathing In\, Breathing Out” which earned her a Flagstaff Viola Award nomination showcases her melancholy-yet-goofy approach to songwriting that holds storytelling at the center of her lyrics. In 2024\, she seeks to match the darker\, moodier tones with more mature lyrics dealing with mental health and religious deconstruction. Currently\, Bryan is gearing up to hit the studio to record her second full-length album and planning more tours for this upcoming year. \n\n\n\nGone Before Us gives a musical experience that blends the boundaries of several different genres into a new heavy groove.\n\nNaming Our Monsters is a local Flagstaff band that plays Southwest Emo/Punk. What used to be a solo project has turned into a full band experience you do not want to miss! Urian\, the songwriter for the band\, Takes Inspiration from Multitudes of genres and artists such as Modest Mouse\, Against Me!\, and Tegan and Sara. \nShow is general admission standing room only in the main gallery at Coconino Center for the Arts. \nSave 10% with membership! Members use HA!24 as their promo code prefix (followed by unique member number). SUMMARY:Interference Series Presents: Reclaimed Timber by Beyond This Point
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nWhat if you could hear the relationship between the built and natural worlds? \nFrom Chicago-based ensemble Beyond This Point\, Reclaimed Timber is a sonic portrait of US cities’ unique histories and relationships with their natural environments. \nReclaimed Timber\, an original production from Chicago ensemble Beyond This Point\, asks just this question. Six percussionists play on six pieces of wood for an entire hour\, allowing hypnotic rhythms and undulating waves of sound to crest and fall into each other. The planks of wood came directly from trees in the surrounding area\, and each piece reveals more and more complexity – more tones\, more timbres\, and more history – over the course of Reclaimed Timber. \nBeyond This Point is collaborating with local artists to source the wood for this performance of Reclaimed Timber– whether they be charred from fire\, felled to make way for development\, or desiccated from drought. As these pieces of the natural world are imbued with a “voice” through Reclaimed Timber\, they seem to pose more questions than statements: \nWho decides the value of the natural world?\nWhat pieces of our history are worth keeping?\nHow can we use our past to build our future? \nAccompanying the sounds of the wood is a reactive lighting installation made from over 5000 LEDs and over 200 paper lantern “houses”. The lights respond in real-time to the strikes on the wood\, reflecting the rhythms and waves of sound as flashes and waves of ambient light. \nPresented by the Interference Series in collaboration with NAU Percussion Studies\, NAU Honors College\, and the McAllister CEED (Climate\, Education\, Engagement\, and Design) Program at NAU. Made possible with generous support from John & Lynn Sheik. \nSave 10% with membership! Members use RT24 as their promo code prefix (followed by unique member number). SUMMARY:Interference Series Presents: Wayfaring
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nTaking its name from a beloved American folk song\, Wayfaring is a duo project between bassist/vocalist Katie Ernst and clarinetist James Falzone. What began as a casual meeting between like-minded players has formed into a collective of unusual nuance and depth\, drawing on source material from the jazz tradition\, hymns\, folk songs\, and original compositions from Ernst and Falzone. Wayfaring has toured extensively in the US and Canada and was featured at the 2016 Hyde Park Jazz Festival in Chicago and the 2017 Earshot Jazz Festival in Seattle. Their debut recording\, I Move\, You Move\, was released in Fall 2017 on the Allos Documents label to much critical acclaim and their follow up\, Intermezzo\, arrives in January 2024. \n“Modern jazz history is rife with strong duos\, but Wayfaring stands out by channeling ideas from American folk tradition or the church into music that extends well beyond the language of jazz. A stunning record. ” \n— Peter Margasak\, The Chicago Reader \n“One of the most austerely beautiful recordings of the year sounds very much like a balm for troubled times. Elements of jazz\, folk\, pop\, blues and other genres course through this work\, but it’s the long-lined lyricism and pervasive warmth of the music-making that leave the deepest and most lasting impression. ” \n— Howard Reich\, The Chicago Tribune \nThis performance is supported in part by the NAU Honors College and John and Lynn Schiek \nSave 10% with membership! SUMMARY:Alash
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nAlash are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei)\, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. \n\n\n\n\nWhat distinguishes this trio from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies\, western instruments\, and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music\, but its overall sound and spirit remain decidedly Tuvan. \nTrained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood\, the Alash musicians studied at Kyzyl Arts College just as Tuva was beginning to open up to the West. They formed a traditional ensemble and won multiple awards for traditional throat singing \nin international xöömei competitions\, both as an ensemble and as individuals. At the same time\, they paid close attention to new trends coming out of the West. They have borrowed newideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional \nTuvan music\, but they have never sacrificed the integrity of their own heritage in an effort to make their music more hip. \nAlash first toured the U.S. under the sponsorship of the OpenWorld Leadership program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts. Since then they have returned many times\, to the delight of American audiences. The Washington Post described their music as “utterly stunning\,” quipping that after the performance“audience members picked their jaws up off the floor.” \nAlash enjoys collaborating with musicians of all stripes. Since their early partnership with the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra\, they have joined forces with musicians across the spectrum—from country to classical to jazz to beatboxing. Alash appeared as guest artists on Béla Fleck & the Flecktones’ Grammy-winning holiday CD Jingle All the Way (2008). They joined Chicago’s innovative Fifth House Ensemble in a groundbreaking concert series called Sonic Meditations\, and later were part of a “global jam band” which recorded the soundtrack for the video game The Pathless. Most recently\, Bady-Dorzhu Ondar teamed up with beatboxer Shodekeh in a live recording of original Tuvan songs filtered through the creative artistry of hip hop musicians. \nBeyond performing\, Alash has a passion for teaching and promoting understanding between cultures. Their tours often include workshops in which they introduce Tuvan music to students in primary\, middle and high schools\, colleges\, universities\, and music conservatories. Children as young as 8 and 9 have learned to throat-sing. One inspired student exclaimed\, “Alash opened my eyes to a whole new world!” \nAlash albums: Alash Live at the Enchanted Garden (2006)\, Alash (2007)\, Buura (2011)\, Achai (2015\, re-released on Smithsonian Folkways in 2017)\, Meni Mana (2020)\, Embodiments by Bady-Dorzhu Ondar with Shodekeh and hip hop artists (2022). \nMembers of Alash: \nBady-Dorzhu Ondar: vocals\, igil\, guitar\, bayan (accordion). SUMMARY:House of Waters
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n“One of the most unique groups you will ever come across . . . I can only describe their sound as being a sound which one has longed to hear without truly realising it.” (The Bubble) \n“In today’s world\, there are no musical boundaries\,” says Max ZT of ‘House of Waters\,’ a trio that makes those words come alive as they incorporate elements of West-African\, jazz\, psychedelic\, indie rock\, classical and world music into their astonishingly unique sound. \nThe “Jimi Hendrix of the Hammered Dulcimer” (NPR)\, Max ZT is an innovator of an instrument rarely heard in contemporary music. With roots in Irish folk music\, Max has studied in Senegal\, where he trained with the Cissoko Griot family\, and India\, where he studied under the santoor master Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. His unorthodox playing style has been a pioneering force in revolutionizing dulcimer techniques. \nMoto Fukushima is a recognized master of the six-string bass. With a background in jazz improvisation\, Western classical music and the music of South America\, Moto’s playing is a combination of finesse\, subtlety\, and power that leaves audiences “slack-jawed in awe.” (Jazz Wise) Together they work with a variety of different drummers and percussionists from Antonio Sanchez (Pat Matheny)\, to Larnell Lewis (Snarky Puppy)\, to Richie Barshay (Esperanza Spalding)\, to Juan Chiavassa. (Mike Stern) \nHouse of Waters’ highly anticipated upcoming album will be released in this upcoming fall 2023\, on Snarky Puppy’s GroundUP Music label and features Antonio Sanchez on drums with special guests Mike Stern (guitar) and Priya Darshini (vocals). Produced by Guy Eckstine (Herbie Hancock\, Chris Botti)\, House of Waters will tour the album throughout the country. These prolific composers have worked together for sixteen years\, and have been making gorgeous music since the beginning. Their eponymous 2016 album\, House of Waters (GroundUP Music)\, debuted at #2 on the iTunes World Music Charts. All About Jazz calls it\, “A rare and beautiful gem\,” while TimeOut NY calls their performances\, “A sight to behold.” House of Waters has scored an Emmy-winning documentary (ESPN)\, and recently re-scored three 100+ year-old French Dadaist-Era silent films in partnership with GroundUP Music and Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas. \nThey have received the South Arts Jazz Road Grant and have an extensive touring history around the world. Having shared the stage with influential musicians including Pandit Ravi Shankar\, Victor Wooten\, Tinariwen\, Snarky Puppy\, Karsh Kale\, and more: “House of Waters is a band that is bending the very fabric of the musical universe as we know it.” (Onstage Review) \nSave 10% with membership! SUMMARY:Chris Pureka
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nIt’s rare for an artist to bridge the divide between critical acclaim and dedicated fan engagement. Chris Pureka is a Portland-based singer-songwriter whose body of work has resonated deeply with these seemingly disparate milieus. Their music has straddled the folk\, americana and indie rock genres over the course of their 20-year career\, and over that time\, their bold vulnerability in processing the intimacies of life in song has struck a chord with those listeners who crave authenticity and depth. \nChris’s elegant emotionality as a vocalist and their flair as a lyricist have garnered them favorable comparisons to Chan Marshall\, Bruce Springsteen\, and Patty Griffin. Over many years of touring on both sides of the Atlantic\, they have shared the stage with such diverse and esteemed artists as The Lumineers\, Gregory Alan Isakov\, The Cowboy Junkies\, Haley Heynderickx\, and Ani DiFranco. They have had their songs featured on such television shows as Brothers and Sisters\, Covert Affairs and Shameless and well as a song featured in the Sundance featured indie film\, The Royal Road. Along the way\, Chris has remained truly independent\, selling nearly 50\,000 albums through their own label\, Sad Rabbit Records. \nSpecial guest Avery Marshall is a music maker from Tulsa\, Oklahoma. With conversational song-writing\, he sings about love and what it means to be human. \nSave 10% with membership! Members use CP23 as their promo code prefix (followed by unique member number). DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nBonnie “Prince” Billy with special guest Laurel Premo \n\n\nThe man who sings and composes under the name Bonnie “Prince” Billy and acts under the name Will Oldham has\, over the past three-plus decades\, made an idiosyncratic journey through\, and an indelible mark on\, the worlds of indie rock and independent cinema. With his highly individualistic approach to music making and the music industry\, one that cherishes intimacy\, community\, mystery\, and spontaneity; his brilliance has captivated fans and made Bonnie one of our most influential and beloved songsmiths. \nBonnie “Prince” Billy’s latest offerings include the 2019’s I Made a Place\, 2020’s Superwolves (with Matt Sweeney) and Blind Date Party\, a collaborative album consisting of covers made with Bill Callahan during the pandemic lockdown. 2023 will see the release of his first children’s book\, based on the song “Shorty’s Ark” (from Superwolves)\, as well as a new proper BPB record of new songs. \n\n\n\n\nLaurel Premo is known for her rhythmically deep and rapt delivery of roots music on fiddle\, guitar\, and vocals. Her solo performances dive deep into traditional and new fiddle music\, musically revealing a bloom of underlying harmonic drones\, minimalist repetition\, and rich polyrhythms. Presenting these sounds on finger style electric guitar and fiddle\, Premo fully leans in to the archaic melodies and in-between intonations that connect folk sounds to the mystic and unknown. \n\n\n\nSave 10% with membership! Members use BP23 as their promo code prefix. SUMMARY:Mama's Broke
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\nMama’s Broke have spent the past eight years in a near-constant state of transience\, pounding the transatlantic tour trail. They’ve brought their dark\, fiery folk-without-borders sound to major festivals and DIY punk houses alike\, absorbing traditions from their maritime home in Eastern Canada all the way to Ireland and Indonesia. Nowhere is the duo’s art-in-motion approach more apparent than on their long-awaited sophomore record Narrow Line (May 13\, 2022 on Free Dirt Records); it’s the sound of nowhere in particular\, yet woven with a rich synthesis of influences that knows no borders. It earned them a JUNO nomination for Traditional Roots Album of the Year 2022. The eleven songs on Narrow Line burrow deeply\, with close harmony duets\, commanding vocals\, and poignant contemplations on cycles of life\, including birth and death. Tinges of Americana stand side-by-side with the ghosts of Eastern European fiddle tunes and ancient a cappella ballad singing\, melding into an unusually accessible dark-folk sound. A careful listen of Narrow Line invokes an ephemeral sense of place—whether real or imagined—inviting us to take comfort in the infinite possibilities of life\, whether or not we ever choose to settle down. \nFor a group defined by constant touring\, it’s not surprising that the two artists that make up Mama’s Broke\, Lisa Maria and Amy Lou Keeler\, met on the road. As Lisa remembers it\, “Amy was driving her old Mercedes from Montreal to Nova Scotia and I was looking for a ride. We spent the 17 hours in the car talking almost exclusively about music. By the time we reached Halifax we started playing together\, and within a week or two became a band.” Both coming out of traveling communities that are focused on music and protest\, the two owe the way in which they move through the world to the integrated and self-sustaining nature of DIY culture and activism. It was a busy life that took them on a roundabout annual touring schedule running between Canada\, the United States\, Ireland\, the UK\, and Europe. In each country\, they built grassroots DIY communities to support their music or moved along the pathways of communal organizing that sustained other touring artists. \nThe driving force behind this band is – and has always been – the commitment to challenge borders between people\, places\, and traditions; while encouraging freedom of expression and community through music. \n Save 10% with membership!
