DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n\n\nTuvan throat singing (xöömei)\, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time.\n\n\n\nAlash are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei)\, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. What distinguishes this group from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies\, western instruments\, and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music\, but its overall sound and spirit remain decidedly Tuvan. \nTrained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood\, the Alash musicians studied at Kyzyl Arts College just as Tuva was beginning to open up to the West. They formed a traditional ensemble and won multiple awards for traditional throat singing\nin international xöömei competitions\, both as an ensemble and as individuals. At the same time\, they paid close attention to new trends coming out of the West. They have borrowed newideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional\nTuvan music\, but they have never sacrificed the integrity of their own heritage in an effort to make their music more hip. \nAlash first toured the U.S. under the sponsorship of the OpenWorld Leadership program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Arts. Since then they have returned many times\, to the delight of American audiences. The Washington Post described their music as “utterly stunning\,” quipping that after the performance“audience members picked their jaws up off the floor.” \nAlash enjoys collaborating with musicians of all stripes. Since their early partnership with the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra\, they have joined forces with musicians across the spectrum—from country to classical to jazz to beatboxing. Alash appeared as guest artists on Béla Fleck & the Flecktones’ Grammy-winning holiday CD Jingle All the Way (2008). They joined Chicago’s innovative Fifth House Ensemble in a groundbreaking concert series called Sonic Meditations\, and later were part of a “global jam band” which recorded the soundtrack for the video game The Pathless. Most recently\, Bady-Dorzhu Ondar teamed up with beatboxer Shodekeh in a live recording of original Tuvan songs filtered through the creative artistry of hip hop musicians. \nBeyond performing\, Alash has a passion for teaching and promoting understanding between cultures. Their tours often include workshops in which they introduce Tuvan music to students in primary\, middle and high schools\, colleges\, universities\, and music conservatories. Children as young as 8 and 9 have learned to throat-sing. DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n\n\nDavid Huckfelt is a singer/ lyricist /activist and founding frontman of Minneapolis indie-folk cult favorites The Pines. An Iowa native and former theology student\, Huckfelt attended the Iowa Writers Workshop before turning his attention to songwriting and performing. With improvisational mastery\, Huckfelt’s shows and songs of no-spiritual-surrender have earned him a devoted following from small-town opera houses & theaters to national festival stages like Hardly Strictly Bluegrass\, Edmonton and Calgary Folk Fests\, and the legendary First Avenue mainroom\, sharing stages with Mavis Staples\, Emmylou Harris\, Bon Iver\, Calexico\, Trampled By Turtles & more. An early encounter and collaboration with radical Native American poet John Trudell introduced Huckfelt as friend & partner to an array of Indigenous artists & activists including Winona LaDuke\, Louise Erdrich\, & Keith Secola\, working for climate justice and tribal sovereignty under the banner of music + resistance. He is one of the most influential artists in the field today. Rising from the grassroots of North America\, he is a songwriter of the people. Critics have dubbed him as the Native versions of both Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen. NDN Kars (Indian cars)\, his most popular song is considered the contemporary Native American anthem\, achieving legendary status and earning him a well deserved cult following. It has been the number one requested song on tribal radio since the 1992. In 2011\, he joined the ranks of Jimmy Hendrix\, Hank Williams\, Crystal Gale\, and Richie Valens\, and was inducted into the Native Music Hall of Fame. \nBorn in 1957 in Cook\, Minnesota\, Secola is affiliated with the Anishinabe tribe. He graduated from Mesabi Community College with a degree in Public Service in 1979\, and completed a BA in American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota in 1982. He is married and has two children. \nSecola is an accomplished artist\, garnering awards and accolades as a musician\, a singer\, a songwriter\, a composer and a producer. He is highly skilled with the guitar\, flute\, mandolin\, banjo\, harmonica\, and piano\, and has played in venues from the halls of the Chicago Urban Indian Centre\, to the walls of the bottom of the Grand Canyon. He has also performed at the Olympic Games in Atlanta 1996 and Salt Lake City 2002\, and toured Europe several times. Among his numerous appearances he has graced the stages of the Rockslide Festival in Denmark\, the Grand Opening Gala of the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian\, The Kennedy Center and the SXSW in Austin\, TX\, and is a staple at the Grassroots Festival in Upstate New York\, North Carolina and Florida. \nA seven-time Native American Music Award winner\, Secola has earned NAMMYs not only for his music\, but also his abilities as a producer\, to include The Best Linguistic Recording for producing ANISHINABEMOIN (2007). A well respected musician\, he has worked with music legends such as Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead. SUMMARY:S.E. Willis & Friends
DESCRIPTION:An evening of Flagstaff blues \n\n\n\n\nBack in Flagstaff in 1969 musicians worked in just a few places: fraternity parties\, high school dances and the Oddfellows Underground on Arrowhead\, a teen dance hall in the basement. We all played there. (There were country bands at the Museum Club\, but no love for teenage rockers) \nMy band was the Vanilla Doorknob\, a psychedelic name for a pretty conservative small town dance band. The other band was the Sympler Form\, with Donny Roberts on guitar and Isidro Padilla on vocals. They were the bad boys\, south side characters who played a lot of underground material. They were covering the Velvet Underground’s Heroin for heaven’s sake! \nIsidro moved on\, lineups changed\, but Donny and I were pals and 17 years old then. Word got out that there was a new singer in town\, an older guy from New York City who had been in the Army in Germany. That was Frank Manhardt and I remember watching him at the Underground. \nHe stuck around\, bands changed\, and he and Donny became locally famous as Freaky Frank and the Pistons. Big crowds for them down at Shaky Jake’s\, the Zanzucchi family’s bar on South San Francisco. Then they moved to Tucson and did really well there as Straight Shot and the Frank and Woody Show. \nDonny moved to Nashville and became a top studio musician\, working with Webb Wilder and\, famously\, playing guitar on Steve Earle’s Copperhead Road. \nI’ve been trying to think of something different to try at Coconino Center for the Arts. November’s “An Evening of Flagstaff Blues” with Tommy Dukes\, Bob Blasi\, Dale Caddell\, Roger Smith\, Chuck Curry and Greg Varlotta was quite successful\, selling out for standing room only. Plans are being made for a Fall repeat\, but on May 9 Roger Smith and I will be hosting a smaller gathering with Frank Manhardt (Freaky Frank) and Donny Roberts. Other guests to be announced. \nThis show will be more eclectic\, not so Blues focused\, with more Americana and even Country elements. We’re having a party 60 years in the making! I know most folks in Northern Arizona weren’t around in 1969 or even ’76\, but I’m inviting you to come out and see what a lifetime of experience playing American music can achieve! Let’s have some fun!

DESCRIPTION:Max Gomez was born and raised in Taos\, New Mexico\, where he fell under the influence of country and blues singer-songwriters at an early age. After becoming a fixture in the New Mexico music scene\, Gomez left home to pursue a broader horizon. His debut album\, Rule the World (New West Records)\, earned critical acclaim and launched a touring career that has taken him coast to coast across the U.S.\, into Canada\, and throughout Western Europe. \nHowe Gelb long has been saddled with such ticklish titles such as ‘godfather of alt-country’ ( only in the UK) and ‘elder ambassador of desert rock’ ( at 3:00 AM during a desperate writer’s deadline ) but please never utilize the moniker Americana ( which originally was a descriptive instigated by Sylvie Simmons of MoJo aeons ago ) and just call it American music; the result of a melting pot of the poor and tired and the huddled masses yearning to be free. \nIn three decades plus\, he’s managed to mash elements of erosion rock\, de-composition\, crunchy & western\, something close to blues\, punk snark\, lo-fi hi-fi\, pseudo jazz\, gospel a-choir-ing\, semi-standard piano standards and a side swipe of Andalusian gypsy flamenco. \nSLANT CAN  \nwhen straight can’t \nA week’s worth of rehearsing for a Giant Sand European tour with Thøger Lund for the upcoming Danish line up\, for Autumn 2025 led to this spontaneous creation instead that included newly Tuxoned Bethy Goodfellow. Like a child meant to stay on course and finish his homework\, instead would sneak out between songs needing to be gone over and instantly make up something new without losing the groove masters

SUMMARY:CCA Storytellers: Tsoh Tso
DESCRIPTION:In February of 2025\, Cecil Tso released his debut solo album after 13 years of collaborating with friends in Flagstaff and beyond. “Finding Our Balance” is a collection of 16 songs that attempt to tell a piece of Tso’s life from childhood through adulthood. After its release\, the album was celebrated by Tso’s peers\, warmly recieved among the community\, and eventually garnered a Viola Award. Despite any recognition it received\, the album was released during a period of loss and grief that left Tso unable to support it. The year 2026 has been one of healing and making up for lost time. As a belated album listening party and release show\, the evening will be a hybrid listening event featuring live performances\, intimate listening\, and discussion. Tsoh Tso and friends will go through the album in its entirety\, and speak on every song. \nThis event will kick off our newly established series\, CCA Storytellers\, and marks the first exlusive hip hop performance hosted at Coconino Center for the Arts in its 42 year history as a concert venue.

SUMMARY:Dark Sky Quartet plays The Planets
DESCRIPTION:British composer Gustav Holst (1874-1934) composed The Planets between 1914 and 1917. The orchestral suite premiered privately in 1918 and publicly in 1920 and was considered highly innovative at the time. Holst described it as “a series of mood pictures” influenced by astrological and mythological associations with seven planets of the solar system (the dwarf planet Pluto was not discovered until 1930). The piece was first composed in an arrangement for two pianos and later orchestrated. It has since enjoyed tremendous popularity\, becoming a staple of the orchestral repertoire\, and has strongly influenced scores for space faring science fiction movies. It was recently arranged for both string and piano quartet performances by David Koerner for Dark Sky Quartet. \nThe movements of The Planets were originally intended to go in Solar System order from the inner to the outer planets\, but the order was revised for dramatic effect\, starting with Mars\, The Bringer of War. Perhaps influenced by its composition during World War I\, the bellicose Mars inspired John Williams’s score for the Darth Vader themes in Star Wars. It is followed by Venus\, The Bringer of Peace\, and Mercury\, The Winger Messenger. The giant planets then follow in solar system order\, including Jupiter\, The Bringer of Jollity\, Saturn\, The Bringer of Old Age\, Uranus\, The Magician\, and Neptune\, The Mystic. \nThe Planets \nI. Mars\, the Bringer of War \nII. Venus\, The Bringer of Peace \nIII. Mercure\, The Winged Messenger \nIntermission \nIV. Jupiter\, The Bringer of Jollity \nV. Saturn\, The Bringer of Old Age \nVI. Uranus\, The Magician \nVII. Neptune\, The Mystic \nDark Sky Quartet is a northern Arizona-based musical ensemble specializing in celestial and night-sky-inspired classical works. They frequently collaborate with regional events like the Flagstaff Star Party and the Grand Canyon Star Party\, blending professional chamber performance with themes of astronomy and dark sky conservation. They have also performed in specialty Grand Canyon raft trips with Canyoneers. Members include violinist Allison O’Bryant\, pianist/violinist/violist David Koerner\, violist Jacqueline Schwandt\, and cellist Stephen Brown. \nMember Bios \nViolinist Allison Unsworth O’Bryant began playing in Potsdam\, N.Y.\, at the age of 6. She has a B.M. and M.M. in violin performance from Brigham Young University. She enjoys orchestral playing and has performed with the Western Piedmont Symphony\, the North Carolina Symphony\, the Tabernacle Choir Orchestra\, and the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra. She has also played in various recording studios and collaborated with artists such as Josh Groban\, Rod Stewart\, Sting\, John Williams\, the King’s Singers\, and Richard Stolzman. \nPianist/Violinist/Violist Dr. David Koerner studied piano and violin at a young age and became interested in the planets with the second-grade creation of a model of the solar system. He debuted as piano soloist with the LA County Concert Orchestra in the Prokofiev 3rd piano concerto at age 16 and subsequently appeared with southern California orchestras. After competing in the Tchaikovsky piano competition in 1982\, Dr. Koerner returned to planetary interests and received a doctorate in planetary science from Caltech. He worked at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and University of Pennsylvania before joining the astronomy faculty at NAU\, where he recently retired as Emeritus Associate Professor of Astronomy and Planetary Science. Since then\, Dr. Koerner has devoted more time to music\, completing the M.M. degree in instrumental performance at NAU in viola and violin and a graduate certificate in piano. He founded Dark Sky Quartet and brought solo piano music to his stint as Grand Canyon Astronomer in Residence. He was heard most recently in Full Moon Rise concerts in Buffalo Park sponsored by Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition and the Flagstaff Beautification and Public Art Commission. \nViolist Dr. Jacquelyn Schwandt enjoys a varied career as a teacher\, chamber musician\, orchestral musician and recitalist. She currently serves as Professor of Viola and Associate Director of the Kitt School of Music at Northern Arizona University. She is principal viola with the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra and has taught at music camps and master classes both domestically and abroad\, including Suzuki String institutes and camps in Arizona and South Dakota. She has been a featured soloist with several orchestras including the Flagstaff Symphony\, the Newport Symphony in Oregon\, the Musica Sacra Chamber Orchestra in Denver\, Colorado\, where the Denver Post praised her “smooth\, warm tone.” She has served as violist with symphony orchestras across the US and Europe\, participated in several orchestral and chamber music festivals and has completed recital tours in Arizona\, Nevada\, Southern California\, Taiwan and Spain. Dr. Schwandt holds degrees from the University of Oregon (DMA)\, Wichita State University (MM)\, and Southern Methodist University (BM). \nCellist Dr. Stephen Brown is Professor of Music Theory and Coordinator of Music Theory and Composition at Northern Arizona University. He holds degrees from Harvard and Yale\, teaches music theory at both the undergraduate and graduate levels\, and advises Master’s students. He has published research in the theory and analysis of twentieth-century music generally\, and his scholarly work has appeared in Music Theory Spectrum\, Music Analysis\, Journal of Music Theory\, and Music Theory Online. He has given papers at the Society for Music Theory national conference\, the International Musicological Society\, the European Music Analysis Conference\, and various regional music theory societies. Dr. Brown has served on the editorial boards of Music Theory Online and SMT-V (the videocast journal of the Society for Music Theory). He is also Past President of the Rocky Mountain Society for Music Theory. Before coming to NAU\, Dr. Brown taught at the University of Connecticut (where he served as Assistant Professor) and the Oberlin Conservatory (where he was also Assistant Professor and later promoted to Associate Professor with tenure).

SUMMARY:Mama’s Broke - Reunion Album Release Tour
DESCRIPTION:For more than a decade\, Mama’s Broke\, the Canadian duo of Amy Lou Keeler and Lisa Maria\, have forged a style carried across landscapes rather than tied to one. Their forthcoming 12-song LP Reunion\, out August 28 via Free Dirt Records and Forward Music Group\, follows years in near-constant motion\, bringing their folk-without-borders approach to small clubs\, DIY spaces\, and everywhere in between. Winners of the Canadian Folk Music Award for Ensemble of the Year for their 2017 debut Count the Wicked\, their music is rooted in long days playing for passing crowds and traveling by foot\, as well as in the deep wells of folk lineage they’ve tapped into across Eastern Canada\, Appalachia\, Ireland\, and beyond. Their sound doesn’t belong to any one place so much as it passes through them\, grounded in the traditions that shaped it. \nThat foundation was built long before stages and studio sessions\, in traveling communities where music functioned as both currency and connection. The two met within a global network of musicians funding their way through shared songs\, carrying only what they could as they traded melodies and stories across the miles. Playing for hours at a time on the street demanded a repertoire that could hold attention and sustain emotion\, drawing them deep into traditional material and the discipline of close harmony. Over time\, the songs became a common language\, connecting what came before with the music they were making together. \nBuilding on their JUNO-nominated album Narrow Line (2022)\, Reunion reflects a world coming apart in plain sight\, tracing fractured communities\, the erosion of shared ground\, and the growing awareness that the systems we were taught to trust no longer hold or deliver the promises they were meant to keep. The songs don’t preach or prescribe; they reflect\, holding up a mirror and leaving space for something else to take shape. \nRecorded just outside Nashville in Goodlettsville\, Tennessee\, Reunion features subtle contributions from bassist Paul Kowert (Gillian Welch & David Rawlings) and others\, adding depth without pulling focus from the record’s acoustic core. At its heart\, Mama’s Broke remains what it has always been: two voices\, intertwined\, both fragile and enduring. Reunion asks what it means to make something that lasts: not a place you’re from\, or even a place you return to\, but what you make together\, and how long it lasts\, if you tend to it. \nMama’s Broke are touring their new album in North America and Europe throughout 2026 and 2027.

DESCRIPTION:It might’ve even been last night\, but Steve Poltz just played the greatest show of his life. Guess what? \nThe next show will be even greater\, making that show the greatest show of his life. \nAre you starting to notice a trend? \nHe isn’t shy about it either. \nEven after most likely thousands of shows (but who’s counting?)\, he hits the stage with the same amount of energy and always makes sure to declare\, “This is the greatest show of my life.” \nIt’s why he’s quietly emerged as the kind of live phenomenon celebrated passionately by a diehard fanbase worldwide and renowned as a festival favorite everywhere from Bluesfest in Byron Bay and High Sierra Music Festival in California and Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Colorado to Cayamo Cruise (where he actually got married). It’s why his music has crept into pop culture via collaborations with everyone from Jewel and Billy Strings to Molly Tuttle\, Sierra Hull\, Nicki Bluhm\, Oliver Wood\, and even the late Mojo Nixon. It’s why after over a dozen albums\, he’s still creatively firing on all cylinders and critically acclaimed by the likes of Rolling Stone\, Associated Press\, Billboard\, and many more. \nNevertheless\, the next gig will be the greatest show for him (and maybe for you too)… \n“I started doing it years ago\, because I feel grateful to still be alive\,” he notes. ”Even today\, I still do it\, and I believe my own bullshit. I convinced myself that every show is the greatest show I’ve ever played. They’re all different\, and it depends on my mood each day\, but I know I’m there to entertain people. It always cracks me up when I stumble into some sort of weird thing that’s handed to me like a gift from the freaky deadly heavens above.” \nSteve might as well be “a gift from the freaky deadly heavens above” himself. He was born in Nova Scotia—Halifax\, to be exact. Somewhere along the way\, he began his relationship with the guitar at six-years-old. “We’re joined at the hip and lip and it’s always near my grip\,” he affirms. He grew up in Los Angeles and Palm Springs (where he “met Elvis and Liberace”) and settled in San Diego (where he cut his teeth “under the tutelage of The Beat Farmers”). \nHe kicked off his musical journey in San Diego-bred underground favorites The Rugburns. However\, the world got to know Steve when co-wrote two tracks from Jewel’s diamond-certified debut Pieces Of You\, including the multi platinum Billboard Hot 100 #2 “You Were Meant For Me” (he’s also in the video). He delivered his own full-length debut One Left Shoe in 1998 and paved the way for an extensive solo catalog defined by what he calls “evocative lyrics mixed with positivity and traces of tragicomedy.”  \nIf you so choose\, you can trace his evolution from “Everything About You” (which popped up in Notting Hill) to the staple “Can O’ Pop”— christened “a fizzy delight” by Rolling Stone. The latter graced his 2022 album\, Stardust & Satellites. Co-produced and created with The Wood Brothers\, it garnered widespread acclaim. HOLLER. hailed it as “a wonderfully energized\, often joyful and wryly provocative release from the charismatic Steve Poltz\,” while No Depression dubbed it “poignant and ultimately uplifting.” Glide Magazine applauded how\, “He takes chances like few others and seems to be increasingly more unconventional as he embraces Americana.” \nSimultaneously\, a myriad of artists continue to seek him out as a collaborator in the studio. Whether it be “Leaders” with Billy Strings or “Million Miles” with Molly Tuttle\, he’s got dozens of cuts with various friends under his belt. He contributed two tunes to Deer Tick’s Emotional Contracts with frontman John J. McCauley going on to profess to Brooklyn Vegan\, “Steve Poltz may be the biggest\, most direct inspiration for me on this record.” \nSteve adds\, “Usually when these folks and many others come over to my house in Nashville we end up with something I love. I try not to overthink it. There are no rules. It’s kind of like fishing. You don’t catch anything if you don’t throw your rod in the water. So I guess I just try to be available for inspiration\, mixed with perspiration and exasperation.” \nSpeaking of perspiration\, he regularly travels far and wide to audiences of all ages and all continents most every day. \n“I travel from town to town and fool people\,” he grins. “I sing them songs and tell them stories and somehow they decide to pay money to obtain some merch and witness the spectacle. Then I return a year later and fool them again.” \nIn the end\, Steve is probably gearing up for the greatest show of his life as you read this. \nThankfully\, that will never change. \nHe signs off\, “I’m just a weirdo\, a freak\, a bon vivant\, a rounder\, a rabble rouser\, a workaholic\, a people pleaser\, an idiot and a grateful kid who ran away and joined the circus.” \nCan we say it might just be The Greatest Show on Earth?!
