DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n\nThis suite of 8 tangos by Astor Piazzolla depicts an angel’s journey to save a small town in Buenos Aires and a demon’s brash attempt to stop it. Piazzolla perfectly blends elements of classical\, jazz and Argentinian music to showcase the tango’s flirtatious rhythms and delicate nuances that will take your breath away. \nBased in Phoenix\, Arizona\, the Driftwood Quintet is a chamber group dedicated to crossing genres and bending boundaries in classical music. Through the work of Driftwood’s arrangers\, a performance can feature anything from orchestral masterworks or piano works to the imaginative soundtracks from the greatest video games and films. Driftwood also seeks to create memorable experiences through collaborations with artists from a variety of disciplines\, ranging from jazz musicians and singer/songwriters to dancers and visual artists. \nDriftwood also exemplifies its dedication to chamber music through educational outreach\, engaging youth through interactive performances that integrate music with a variety of disciplines such as language arts\, science\, and history. Members of the Driftwood Quintet are active music educators in the Phoenix metropolitan area\, working in underprivileged communities to improve the quality of public music education and foster lifelong musical literacy. \nOriginally from Mesa\, Arizona\, Gabe Hall-Rodrigues is a Seattle-based\, Brazilian-American musician with a deep love for the accordion\, piano\, vocals\, and composition. His musical ventures have led him to perform with diverse groups like Jared and the Mill\, the Salt River Brass Band\, the Seattle Philharmonic\, the Ben Thomas Tango Project\, and Brazilian forró band Foleada. He most recently dazzled audiences at the 2024 Ystad Jazz Festival as part of Bobby Medina’s Latin American Jazz Experience. Additionally\, Gabe also co-creates beautiful music as part of the accordion duo Creosote with his wife Jamie Maschler\, offering unique interpretations of Brazilian music and original compositions. \nGabe’s talent on the accordion has been recognized globally\, with accolades such as winning the American Accordionists Association’s Solo Virtuoso Competition in 2010 and clinching 2nd place in the International Open category at the prestigious Trophee Mondial in Loule\, Portugal in 2019. \nA passionate educator\, Gabe draws on nearly two decades of experience to inspire students both in-person in Seattle and virtually across the U.S. He also dedicates his time to nurturing the accordion community as the former conductor of the Rose City Accordion Club Camp (2017-2024)\, co-director of Emerald City Accordion\, and as the current president of the North American Accordion Collaborative. \nGabe Hall-Rodrigues genuine love for music is palpable\, and he uses his talents to connect with others and spread joy through his art. SUMMARY:Gareth Pearson
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n\nGareth Pearson is referred to as “The Welsh Tornado” which is particularly appropriate\, seeing as this special talent combines fingerstyle pyrotechnics\, with explosive lead runs making Pearson one of the most exciting acoustic musicians gigging today. \nGareth has a distinctive style that can be heard through his creative and innovative arrangements which cover a wide spectrum of genres\, including country/folk/classical/pop/rock/jazz/swing and bluegrass music\, along with his own beautiful and often intricate original compositions. Drawing his playing style initially from influences such as Chet Atkins\, Merle Travis\, Jerry Reed and Tommy Emmanuel\, he has developed a style that is both inspiring and entertaining. \nWithin a year of taking up the guitar\, Gareth was opening for Tommy Emmanuel on his 2005 UK tour. It was in Cardiff where Tommy invited Gareth to play at the CAAS convention (Chet Atkins Appreciation Society) in Nashville Tennessee. Later that year\, Gareth was performing and touring alongside Ray Davies (The Kinks)\, John Renbourne\, and Southside Johnny and the Ashbury Jukes. During the Southside Johnny tour\, Gareth was invited by Southside to be flown over to the USA to open for his annual New Years Eve concert at the Count Basie Theatre in New Jersey. The following year Gareth was invited by Tommy Emmanuel to be the support act for his UK tour\, following extensive UK supports to Jan Akkerman\, Andy McKee and appearing at numerous Folk Festivals and Guitar workshops including the Montreal Jazz Festival. \nWith appearances throughout Europe and a growing reputation\, Gareth was invited to perform at the 2008 Canadian Guitar Festival where he came to the attention of Candyrat Records. This lay the seed for Gareth to be the first UK guitarist to be signed by the label. On its release\, Gareth’s debut album “Urban Echoes Vol 1” was selected by Acoustic Guitar editors and frequent contributors as one of the “Essential Acoustic Albums of 2010”. SUMMARY:Interference Series Presents: Thollem McDonas - Solo Piano
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n\n“Listening to Thollem play the piano is an astonishing experience. He has an innate ability to compose transcendent music using the piano as his expressive voice and to explore the depth and range of the instrument like no one else.” (Joan Jeanrenaud\, Kronos Quartet) \nThollem’s music is genre-bending\, code-switching\, omni-idiomatic\, and intersectional. Quality Revolutionary Entertainment! His music expresses the culmination of his life’s experiences in dialogue with the universe and fellow human beings. As a result of growing up in the culturally diverse SF Bay Area\, his classical piano training\, and his itinerant lifestyle since\, Thollem’s interests\, influences and inspirations range widely. He has spent most of his life performing and collaborating with hundreds of artists and communities throughout N. America and Europe and has released well over 100 albums on 27 different vanguard labels. Multitudes have inspired and influenced him as a pianist from Scriabin to Monk\, Scarlatti to Nina Simone\, Glenn Gould\, John Cage\, Art Tatum\, as well as his contemporaries. Thollem’s parents were both pianists\, and his earliest memories were of climbing up to play the inside of the piano. \nBorn and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area\, Thollem began playing the piano\, composing and improvising as a child\, absorbing the sounds of his culturally diverse upbringing. As an adult he has continued to incorporate the breadth of musics he has experienced on his extensive travels. Since 2005\, he has played over 1\,500 concerts throughout N. America and Europe as a soloist and in collaboration with other musicians\, dancers and filmmakers. In that time span\, as lead facilitator or co-leader\, Thollem has released close to 100 albums on 23 different vanguard labels. A very brief cross section of his many collaborators include William Parker\, Pauline Oliveros\, Stefano Scodanibbio\, Nels Cline\, Rob Mazurek\, Ravish Momin\, Michael Wimberly\, Mike Watt and Carmina Escobar. DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets\n\nS.E. Willis moved to Flagstaff\, Az in 1967 and began his career as a musician shortly afterwards. He’s been a significant presence in Northern Arizona ever since\, returning regularly during his 35 years in the San Francisco Bay Area. Willis is a multi-instrumentralist\, starting with organ and harmonica and later adding piano and accordion. He was inducted into the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame in 1994\, and has since received a Bay Area Music Award (Bammy) and a Blues Foundation Award for Band of the Year (Elvin Bishop Band). He has released 10 albums of his own music and appeared on a number of other recordings with the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir\, the great New Orleans drummer Zigaboo Modeliste\, Bishop and many others. His latest release is the recording “S.E.Willis and the Willing Live in Oakland\, CA” from a show on May 5\, 2024. He has been a featured soloist on many of the Legendary Blues Cruises and toured in Europe\, North America and Japan. He has also appeared on stage with Chuck Berry\, Bo Diddly\, Jimmy Rogers\, James Cotton\, Pinetop Perkins\, Albert King\, George Thorogood\, John Nemeth and many more. \nS.E. (Steve) Willis has dedicated his working life to preserving and advancing traditional American music\, perhaps most clearly with his 2007 release “Taproot: Songs of Robert Johnson and Hank Williams” and 2014’s “Turtle Dove Bounce\,” a tribute to the piano players who defined 100 years of Blues piano style\, in particular Pinetop Smith\, Little Brother Montgomery\, Big Maceo Meriweather and Leroy Carr. From the moment she first heard the wind singing through a metal gate as a child\, she has been captivated by the magic of resonant air. Her devotion to the saxophone is both spiritual and fiercely disciplined\, informed by years of study\, practice\, and international performance. With sixteen albums as leader or co-leader\, Sikora’s work spans collaborations with artists such as Susan Alcorn\, Brian Chase\, and Ursel Schlicht. She is a member of the soprano saxophone quartet Chaos Theory (led by Sam Newsome) and the improvising trio Eris 136199. Her music has been featured on BBC’s Freeness\, Free Jazz Blog\, and festivals including Jazz em Agosto (Lisbon)\, Vision Festival (NYC)\, Documenta 15 (Germany)\, and the Adelaide Festival of the Arts. \nEric Mingus is a vocalist\, composer\, poet\, and multi-instrumentalist whose career defies categorization. With a voice that can move from thunder to lullaby\, and a creative lineage rooted in the legacy of Black American music\, Mingus works at the intersection of jazz\, blues\, punk\, poetry\, and performance art. He has collaborated with artists including Howard Johnson\, Elliott Sharp\, Hubert Sumlin and Levon Helm\, while developing his own multidisciplinary works such as The Mill—an ongoing project that explores ancestral memory\, survival\, and storytelling in the Great Smoky Mountains. Beloved for their dynamic repertoire of hypnotic solos and sun schlazed melodies\, Etran stakes out a place for Agadez guitar music. Playing a sound that invokes the desert metropolis\, “Agadez” celebrates the sounds of all the dynamism of a hometown wedding. \nEtran is a family band composed of brothers and cousins\, all born and raised in the small neighborhood of Abalane\, just in the shadow of the grand mosque. Sons of nomadic families that settled here in the 1970s fleeing the droughts\, they all grew up in Agadez. The band was formed in 1995 when current band leader Moussa “Abindi” Ibra was only 9 years old. “We only had one acoustic guitar\,” he explains\, “and for percussion\, we hit a calabash with a sandal.” Over the decades\, the band painstakingly pieced together gear to form their band and built an audience by playing everywhere\, for everyone. “It was difficult. We would walk to gigs by foot\, lugging all our equipment\, carrying a small PA and guitars on our backs\, 25 kilometers into the bush\, to play for free…there’s nowhere in Agadez we haven’t played.” \nFrom the days of the Trans-Saharan caravan in the 14th century to a modern-day stopover for Europe-bound migrants\, Agadez is a city that stands at the crossroads\, where people and ideas come together. Understandably\, it’s here where one of the most ambitious Tuareg guitar has taken hold. Agadez’s style is the fastest\, with frenetic electric guitar solos\, staccato crash of full drum kits\, and flamboyant dancing guitarists. Agadez is the place where artists come to cut their teeth in a lucrative and competitive winner-take-all scene. Guitar bands are an integral part of the social fabric\, playing in weddings\, baptisms\, and political rallies\, as well as the occasional concert. \nWhereas other Tuareg guitarists look to Western rock\, Etran de L’Aïr play in a pan-African style that is emblematic of their hometown\, citing a myriad of cultural influences\, from Northern Malian blues\, Hausa bar bands\, to Congolese Soukous. It’s perhaps this quality that makes them so beloved in Agadez. “We play for the Tuareg\, the Toubou\, the Zarma\, the Hausa\,” Abindi explains. “When you invite us\, we come and play.” Their music is rooted in celebration\, and invokes the exuberance of an Agadez wedding\, with an overwhelming abundance of guitars\, as simultaneous solos playfully pass over one another with a restrained precision\, forceful yet never overindulgent. \nRecorded at home in Agadez with a mobile studio\, their eponymous album stays close to the band’s roots. Over a handful of takes\, in a rapid-fire recording session\, “Agadez” retains all the energy of a party. Their message too is always close to home. Tchingolene (“Tradition”) recalls the nomad camps\, with a modern take on traditional takamba rhythms transposed to guitars. The dreamy ballad Toubouk Ine Chihoussay (“The Flower of Beauty”) dives into call and response lyrics\, and solos that dance effortlessly over the frets. On other tracks like Imouwizla (“Migrants”)\, Etran addresses immigration with the driving march parallels the nomads’ plight with travelers crossing the desert for Europe. Yet even at its most serious\, Etran’s music is engaged and dynamic\, reminding us that music can transmit a message while lighting up a celebration. This is music for dancing\, after all. \n\n  \nHailing from the seaside communities surrounding Enoshima\, a small island located 50 km southwest of Tokyo\, maya ongaku is a ragtag collective of local musicians whose brand of earthy psychedelia transcends widely beyond the roots of their inner souls. The name derives not from any kind of ancient civilization\, but rather a neologism defined as the imagined view outside one’s field of vision. The band—currently a trio of Tsutomu Sonoda\, Ryota Takano\, and Shoei Ikeda—finds sanctuary at the Ace General Store\, a beachy vintage shop and salon-like space just hidden from sight from the bustling\, touristy riverside Subana Street. Between discussions on music and art\, curating the vinyl section and manning the register\, and chatting up with locals young and old\, the members find time to jam and record their spontaneous ideas in the studio tucked away in the back. The sonic vocabulary may have changed—from their early years churning out seismic drone metal on albums like Earth 2 (1993) to the dusty Morricone-tinged comeback album Hex; Or Printing in the Infernal Method (2005) to the meditative rock approach of Primitive and Deadly (2014)—but the underlying principle of austerity and restraint remains a constant. With their latest album Full Upon Her Burning Lips\, Earth purges the layers of auxiliary instrumentation that embellished some of their previous records and deconstructed their dynamic to the core duo of Dylan Carlson on guitar and bass and Adrienne Davies on drums and percussion. In the process\, they tapped into the Platonic ideal of Earth—an incarnation of the long running band bolstered by the authority of purpose\, where every note and every strike on the drum kit carries the weight of the world. \nFull Upon Her Burning Lips opens with “Datura’s Crimson Veils”\, a twelve-minute opus that adheres to Earth’s 21st century approach with Carlson’s sepia-toned Bakersfield Sound guitars lurching across a barren landscape while Davies punctuates the melodies with death knell drums. It’s a sound that harkens back to the riff-constructed vistas of their Angels of Darkness\, Demons of Light albums\, but stripped of their ornateness. “It was definitely a very organically developed record\,” Carlson says of the process. “I limited the number of effects I used. I always like the limiting of materials to force oneself to employ them more creatively. Previous Earth records were quite lush sounding\, and I wanted a more upfront and drier sound\, using very few studio effects.” In less capable hands\, these kinds of limitations might diminish the aural scope of the compositions\, but Carlson and Davies have always thrived on reductive methods. \nThe stripped down approach had another advantage. “I really wanted the drums to be present\,” Carlson says. “I felt with previous Earth records that other instrumentation took up so much of the sonic space that the drums were kind of pushed to the side.” This tactic helps highlight Davies’ ability to elevate the drum kit beyond its mere metronomic functions and allows it to serve as an expressive\, nuanced\, and tonally rich component to Earth’s arsenal of sound. \nIn addition to scaling back on their ranks\, Earth altered their previous trajectory by entering into Full Upon Her Burning Lips without a conceptual arc to guide the process\, relying instead on their collective subconscious to hone in on the overarching muse as the songs developed. “In the past I’ve usually had a strong framework for an album\,” Carlson says. “This one developed over the course of writing and recording. It just felt like ‘Earth’—like just the two players doing their best work at playing\, serving the music.” The absence of a pre-existing narrative guiding the compositions meant that the songs were more open and intuitive\, often resulting in more terse musical vignettes like the richly harmonic “Exaltation of Larks” or the dreamily itinerant “Maidens Catafalque”. Yet subconscious impulses gradually created their own subtext for the album. “I wanted this to be a ‘sexy’ record\, a record acknowledging the ‘witchy’ and ‘sensual’ aspects in the music… sort of a ‘witch’s garden’ kind of theme\, with references to mind altering plants and animals that people have always held superstitious beliefs towards. A conjuror or root doctor’s herbarium of songs\, as it were.” \nThe ten tracks on Full Upon Her Burning Lips came together in bits and pieces. Songs like “Cats on the Briar” and “Mandrake’s Hymn” stemmed from a handful of musical phrases and repeating patterns concocted in moments of downtime during their 2017 tour schedule. “Descending Belladonna” came from a live soundtrack project. Other songs came from rehearsals in the months leading up to recording or in moments of divine inspiration in the studio. The record was engineered\, mixed\, and mastered by longtime associate Mell Dettmer at Studio Soli. Knowing their process and their sound\, Dettmer helped harness\, shape\, and document the songs in a manner that highlights the depth of Earth’s sparse components\, capturing hidden dimensions much like the veiled images residing in the Magic Eye prints from the ‘90s. For the patient listener\, the cyclical nature of the songs “She Rides an Air of Malevolence” or “An Unnatural Carousel” reveal new forms with repeated listens\, with the subtle variations between passes creating a kaleidoscope of auditory activity. \n“I feel like this is the fullest expression and purest distillation of what Earth does since I re-started the band\,” Carlson says in reflection of Full Upon Her Burning Lips. And indeed\, anyone that’s followed Earth on their journey will bask in the unadulterated hums\, throbs\, and reverberations conjured by Carlson and Davies. To the casual fan\, this might seem to be a new direction\, but for Ellis\, it’s an extension of his music\, as he taps into the raw essence of the blues. “This is a record I’ve always wanted to make\, and one that my longtime fans have been asking for\,” he says\, noting he’s included an acoustic mini-set in his concert performances for years. In the last 12 months\, Ellis has already performed over 100 solo shows\, many as co-bills with his Alligator label-mate Marcia Ball. “I’m having so much fun playing these shows\,” he says.On Naked Truth (his 21st album)\, Ellis swaps his blistering\, guitar-fueled full band workouts for equally passionate\, soul-searching acoustic folk blues. His famed guitar chops and musical creativity are on full display throughout the album’s 12 songs\, including nine newly written originals. Naked Truth was produced by Ellis\, with the foot-stomping cover of Son House’s Death Letter Blues produced by Atlanta roots musician Eddie 9V. The album was recorded live in the studio using Ellis’ beloved 1969 Martin D-35 (a gift from his father) and his 1937 National Steel O Series guitars. Whether intricately fingerpicking the Martin or playing hair-raising slide on the National Steel\, Ellis delivers each song with unvarnished intimacy. \nThe opener\, Ellis’ original Devil In The Room\, comes from an expression Ellis’ close friend\, the late Col. Bruce Hampton\, would tell his musicians just before a show was about to begin (“We’re here to put the devil in the room\,” he’d say). From the original\, Skip James-inspired Windowpane to the Delta-styled Tallahassee Blues\, to the humorous Grown Ass Man\, Ellis goes deep\, singing and playing the blues’ honest truths. The inclusion of four introspective instrumentals (including a transcendent cover of Leo Kottke’s A Soldier’s Grave On The Prairie\, a song he’s been playing live for almost 50 years) adds even more depth and substance to an album overflowing with riches. Each song carries the weight\, experience and hard-earned wisdom Ellis learned over four decades on the road\, infusing Naked Truth with an emotional authenticity that is palpable from start to finish. \nTinsley Ellis has been immersed in music his whole life. Born in Atlanta 1957 and raised in southern Florida\, he acquired his first guitar at age seven\, inspired by seeing The Beatles perform on The Ed Sullivan Show. He took to guitar instantly\, developing and sharpening his skills as he grew up. Like many kids his age\, Ellis discovered the blues through the back door of British Invasion bands like The Yardbirds\, The Animals\, Cream and The Rolling Stones as well as Southern rockers like The Allman Brothers. One afternoon after high school in 1972\, he and a friend were listening to Al Kooper and Michael Bloomfield’s Super Session record when his friend’s older brother told them that\, if they liked Super Session\, they should go see B.B. King\, who was in town that week. Tinsley saw that show from the very front row. As fate would have it\, King broke a guitar string while playing\, and after changing it without missing a beat\, he handed the broken string to young Tinsley. And yes\, Tinsley still has that string. \nLess than three years later\, Ellis\, already an accomplished teenaged musician\, left Florida and moved to Atlanta. He soon joined a hard-driving local blues band\, the Alley Cats. In 1981\, along with veteran blues singer and harpist Chicago Bob Nelson\, Tinsley formed The Heartfixers\, a group that would become Atlanta’s top-drawing blues band. After cutting four Heartfixers albums (three for the Landslide label)\, Ellis was ready to step out on his own. \nGeorgia Blue\, Tinsley’s first Alligator release\, hit the unprepared public by surprise in 1988\, as press and radio brought his music to more people than ever before. His next four releases—1989’s Fanning The Flames\, 1992’s Trouble Time\, 1994’s Storm Warning\, and 1997’s Fire It Up—further grew his reputation as well as his audience. (His song A Quitter Never Wins\, a highlight of Storm Warning\, was recorded by Jonny Lang\, selling almost two million copies.) Features and reviews ran in The Washington Post\, The Los Angeles Times\, The Boston Globe\, and in many other national and regional publications. And he backed it all up performing hundreds of nights per year. Rolling Stone declared\, “Feral blues guitar…non-stop gigging has sharpened his six-string to a razor’s edge…his eloquence dazzles…he achieves pyrotechnics that rival Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton.” \nIn the early 2000s\, Ellis released albums on Capricorn Records and on Telarc\, returning to Alligator in 2005 with Live–Highwayman\, which captured the fifth-gear energy of his roof-raising live show. He followed it with two more incendiary studio albums\, 2007’s Moment Of Truth and 2009’s Speak No Evil. He self-released four successful albums on his own Heartfixer label before coming back home to Alligator in 2018. That year\, he released the fan favorite Winning Hand\, followed by 2020’s Ice Cream In Hell just before the pandemic sidelined all touring.
