SUMMARY:TOM KIEFER: El Sueño Americano
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Saturday\, September 23 \nMembers Preview 5-6 pm \nTom Kiefer in Conversation with Liz Allen 6 – 6:30 pm \nPublic Reception 6-8 \nTOM KIEFER: EL SUEÑO AMERICANO / THE AMERICAN DREAM \nSEPTEMBER 23 – DECEMBER 23\, 2023 \nTom Kiefer: El Sueño Americano / The American Dream is a photographic documentation of the personal belongings carried by migrants and those seeking asylum that were seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection at a processing facility near the artist’s home in Ajo\, Arizona\, about 40 miles from the U.S./Mexico border. U.S. border agents deemed these belongings as non-essential or potentially lethal. Kiefer asks the viewer to consider these photographs as untold and unknown stories\, markers of human journeys cut short\, creating a personal connection for the viewer that extends compassion and empathy to those who make the dangerous journey across the desert to seek a better life.

SUMMARY:Northern Arizona Immigration Legal Services Presents: Home Is Somewhere Else
DESCRIPTION:This fundraising event blends stories of several immigrant experiences. It opens with a brief introduction to Northern Arizona Immigration Legal Services followed by the screening of Home Is Somewhere Else\, an 88-minute animated documentary film by Carlos Hagerman and Jorge Villalobos. After the film\, which is in both English and Spanish with subtitles\, director Carlos Hagerman will answer questions from the audience. \nHome Is Somewhere Else is a fascinating animated feature documentary providing a window into the hearts and minds of immigrant youth and their undocumented families. The film features three personal stories about immigrant youth to highlight the complexities and challenges they face today. Voiced by the actual children and their families\, the stories are woven together by spoken word poet Lalo “El Deportee”\, the film’s host and MC whose vibrant “Spanglish” breaks codes\, switches standards\, and pushes the viewer to decipher his poems. Each story has its own unique visual animation style drawn by three different teams. The animation allows us to truly see and feel these characters’ worst nightmares\, alongside their colorful hopes and dreams for a better future. \nAbout the Filmmaker: \nCarlos Hagerman was born in Mexico City and received his MFA in Film at NYU as a Fulbright scholar. He worked for eight years as a director in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s production company Zeta Films\, then went on to open production company La Sombra del Guayabo.
