In six 90-minute sessions guided by a facilitator with 20 years of NPR journalism and podcast production experience, you’ll find a clear voice for your podcast within a storytelling framework. Through listening sessions, discussions, and hands-on tutorials, you will finish the course with a constructed podcast episode. Participants will give and receive feedback and support in a safe, creative environment.

This course will cover:

  1. Introduction to podcasting, pitching and focus sentences (8/9)
  2. Booking guests/storytellers, interviewing (8/16)
  3. Elements of story and structure, writing for the ear (8/23)
  4. Finding your voice as host (9/6)
  5. Putting it all together (9/13)
  6. Listening and feedback session (9/20)

This workshop is for you if…

  • You want to get into podcasting or radio but don’t have the experience or connections.
  • You want to build your storytelling skills.
  • The idea of learning new things and practicing new skills excites you.
  • You or your organization wants to produce a podcast heavily informed by storytelling techniques.
  • You enjoy being a part of the creative process.

Prerequisites:

Laptop computer (limited number available for use at CCA), with audio editing software (free and low-cost software options available).

Access to a recording device (CCA has a limited number of digital audio recorders that participants can share). Please bring your own SD card. Smartphones are also acceptable.

Participants are asked to fill out a brief questionnaire upon registration.

Instructor’s Qualifications:

  • Trained by Rob Rosenthal through a Transom mentorship (guest teachers Ira Glass and Jay Allison), Robert McKee, and Uniondocs.
  • Master’s in Journalism from Northwestern
  • 20+ years of public radio reporting and editing, NPR freelancer
  • Six years podcast production experience
