The new exhibition STEM City Arts features art that considers Science, Technology, Engineering and/or Math as its subject matter or as central to its creation.

STEM City Arts is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00am – 5:00pm, April 14 – June 6, 2015.

The exhibition features works including that of local artists and leading national and internationally exhibited artists. Notable pieces in the show include Triggered, a 2011 two channel film installation by Guggenheim Fellow Dornith Doherty; documentary footage of projection mapping projects by Brooklyn and Budapest based collective, 3_search, a 3D printed installation work by Julie Libersat; multi-media installation by Flagstaff based artist Shawn Skabelund; and the world premiere of a new video and photography installation by São Paulo based artist Colfax. The exhibition is the first of its kind in Northern Arizona bringing together artists from across the globe, with avant-garde and thought-provoking work that relies heavily on the use of STEM in its production.

“Art is the Queen of all sciences communicating knowledge to all the generations of the world,” said Leonardo Da Vinci. Artists are critical in opening the door to deeper understanding of science, technology, engineering and math. Given Flagstaff’s designation/proclamation as America’s First STEM Community and its longstanding role in astronomy, geology, forestry, and now bioscience, the exhibition aims to explore the depth of Flagstaff’s love of the sciences. Flagstaff STEM City Consortium is the co-partner of this exhibition.

The opening reception for the exhibition was on Saturday, April 11 from 6-8 p.m. at the Coconino Center for the Arts. View photos of the opening reception.

STEM City Arts is curated by Erin Joyce.
